I am planning on paying it for a settled amount when i recieve my income tax check. Will this make my credit look any better, is it worth it for me to pay it, or just let it fall off after seven years? Will it benifit me to pay it in terms of how my credit looks?

I am concerned about identity theft. A collection agency contacted me re: an account that was charged off that they want me to pay, but that account number does not appear on my credit report and they said it will take 4 weeks for me to get a validation of debt, which will have my name, social security number, and address on it, but not my signature. What should I do?

I no longer have a card for this account. This debt has changed hands many times due to companies merging and/or going out of business. I thought paying this off would be a good thing but i have heard it will make it worse unless i get a pay for delete, but even thought i have researched this i can't figure out if it is legal to ask for a pfd.

I will be able to pay off a $1400 credit card debt soon. I want my credit improved afterwords. Is there anything I can do to keep it from going down afterwards? I've heard of this happening.

Back in 2000 my dad opened a credit card for me. I am not denying I ran up the balance and fell behind.
The card has been charged off and sold from one collection agency to another. If one of these companies try’s to take him to court, what could happen? Now some background:
He is retired. He is 81 years old. He doesn’t own a dime to his name other than a 1970 mobile home.
He is worried about going to jail because of me. I told him they don’t jail people for debt.
If it goes to court, can I step in and have them garnish my check even though it’s not in my name? Any idea how much they would take a check? The original balance was like $8100, and now with interest etc. they want $12k Plus!
Anyone else had to deal with MRS Associates, INC. They call the house once an hour. Lately they have been getting even nastier stating have our attorney call their office. We simply just don’t answer the phone anymore.
Thanks for your advice.

I would like to settle a few closed credit accounts that have been charged off and bought out by debt collectors. The collection agency is offering me a discounted rate to pay off this account. If I choose this option, will my credit report eventually show this account closed and paid off, as stated by the agency?

My credit company closed our account because we defaulted. On my recent credit report is shows "closed" but it still says past due even though we have made payments as agreed every month since the payment plan started. Is this a charge off? or not as bad as a charge off?

I have solid credit, a round a 700 credit score. However my Fiance has poor credit due to some problems in college and her lack of using credit in the past few years. Her income is very good, and without it I could ever carry the mortgage we are looking for on my own. My question is how much will her credit score effect the type of rate we get or the get of line we get?

Every now and then this seminary will send me a letter threatening to send me to a collection agency. I make payments as I can, but it is not top priority. When I took a few classes with this institution the understanding was I would pay them back when I could, but there was no time constraint on it. Then when I withdrew from school they began making impossible demands (ie. pay the whole chunk in one month or make monthly payments of $900)....I have most of the debt paid off, but now they are coming back threatening again....can they send me to collection if I make some kind of payment in the next month?

My friend is a total idiot with his money and ended up going bankrupt about a year and a half ago. He just quit his job and landed another one. The new job told him that he is supposed to start on Feb.5. But he got a letter in the mail saying that the new job checked his credit report and the bankruptcy showed. But the job hasn't contacted him saying that he can't work there, so he is planning on going in on Monday. Why do they check your credit history? And if it is so important, why do they not seem to care that he has horrible credit, or are they going to tell him not to come in?
