I've answered this question a number of times in the past. And once again I get a laugh at these "informed" answers.
So let me state again...there is NO law that requires any negative item must stay on your credit report.
When you pay off a debt, the creditor is required to show the debt is "paid" but all information about charge offs, late fees and collections will remain.
However, you can negotiate with the creditor to remove the listing once the bill is paid. Yes, they can delete their own listing.
Therefore, I always recommend that when you negotiate with the creditor, demand that they delete the entry IN WRITING before you pay them a dime.

possibly in time. Just because you paid it off doesn't mean the creditor will remove that they had to send you to collection. Thats why we have the credit reporting agencies so that one can get a handle on how someone pays there bills.

no. The fair credit reporting act makes them show "paid collection" but total removal will take up to 7 years to fall off.

That can be part of the deal...but you need to follow up and make sure that they do it. Same with banks and any other creditors. Once they have their money, they aren't too motivated to clean your record. Just stay on top of them, and don't just assume they are doing it...
