Every now and then this seminary will send me a letter threatening to send me to a collection agency. I make payments as I can, but it is not top priority. When I took a few classes with this institution the understanding was I would pay them back when I could, but there was no time constraint on it. Then when I withdrew from school they began making impossible demands (ie. pay the whole chunk in one month or make monthly payments of $900)....I have most of the debt paid off, but now they are coming back threatening again....can they send me to collection if I make some kind of payment in the next month?

The short answer is yes, there is no reason they could not do that. However, it doesn't sound as though you had a formal agreement in place, only a casual arrangement. That sort of complicates things. The best thing to do is respond to their letters, certified letter is best, and propose a repayment sked on your own terms. If you acknowlege your obligation to repay them in addition to setting reasonable terms based on what can afford each month they should be ok with that. The imortant thing is keep communication open with them before you have to communicate with a collection agency, cuz I think they're a lot nastier than a seminary.

you are making an effort to pay, and they are accepting what you send. if they were going to send you to a collection agency they would have done it by now.
