Are there any legal concerns for a company that ignores its own policy manual about posting all openings in the company and interviewing the applicants and promoting the best qualified for the opening ? Our manager hand picked his buddy for the job and it was a done deal. Several of the other interested people are over 40 yrs old and had much more experience . Seems illegal to me but is it ? What can be done ?

The owner of the CBRF-Group home was upset with me because of some he say she say. The owner thought I was on the phone (while on break) with a recent employee so he Told me to get off the phone. He hit redial and asked for her name only to find I was calling to check on my kids. Then he told me to empty my pockets, looking for my cell phone. I didn't have it so he got mad. I told him I was calling equal rights on him for harrassment. the next day I was fired. Now he's trying to prevent me from getting a new job. What should I do?

my employer accused me that i lied on my application when they asked me if i had any Conviction.. i denied it. 10 days after, they terminated me relating to the misdemeanor case i had in chicago, IL. the thing is, i was never convicted by that state..their law stated that once you finished court supervision, there'll be no CONVICTION. i was just under court supervision which i finished. so it turned out, i didn't lie on that application question. and their reason for terminating me is not valid.. i did appeal to them explaining what court supervision is. but i guess their not open to the idea that some state may have diff. law on convicting a person. The cause of my termination is not valid, i loss my job. What should i do?

I work for Friendly's in Massachusetts and I was just given a $0.75 pay raise (as i've taken on more responsibility on the job) to $8.25 an hour. Suddenly this week's paycheck was 7.50 an hour (when last weeks was 8.25 an hour). There was no forewarning or reason given yet. While shady, is this legal? Is there anything I can do about it?

Question Details: This summer I am an intern at this place and it turns out that I'm not qualified to do a lot of the things that they gave me. My confidence went down the drain. I made mistakes here and there. My boss and the rest of them think I am an complete idiot. My boss seemed very nice sometimes and other times, he ignored me, and couldn't stand me. I felt unintelligent. I know I am not. They are very knowledgeable and quick learners. Not me. I just need the right words to tell them how I feel. I just couldn't relate to them because our weaknesses and strengths are different. Is it bad if i end up crying? I usually do. Emotions too intense. I felt like I didn't fit in with them. There were times when I wanted to open up, but I couldn't. Something restricted me. THIS IS MY LAST CHANCE TO TALK TO HIM. I think he is the type of guy who doesn't give a **** about my feelings. But I AM NOT SURE. Is it worth it. I am tired of feeling like an outsider ALL OF MY LIFE. I don't want to e

I keep taking these personality tests that companies use now. Some how I cannot seem to pass them. I'm not crazy, I'm not psycho, I'm just normal. What in the hell are these tests looking for? I'm sick and tired of them and keep getting myself down because these people want to skip an interview. WHY????

My husband works at a local sushi restaurant as a sushi chef. The only way he could be a chef was if he went full time. But the only way he can be full time is salary. Well my husband took the job but soon realized that he was working 56 hours a week, 6 days a week, with only Mondays off. His boss won't let him take off a day no matter what it is for, because they are understaffed but refuses to hire anyone else. But to top it all off for working 112 hours in two weeks he gets paid a little under 500 dollars. It just doesn't seem right to me. Is there anything than can be done? Also the sushi bar makes tips and the waiters tip out to the sushi bar, but the owner is taking them off the top because he makes 40 dollars in tips in a two week period, and it's been counted over 100 dollars in one night and it's supposed to be split three ways between the sushi chefs (3). What can we do about this?

I have a job interview next week. Can you give me some good questions to ask? It's a job that I'm totally qualified for, but I worry that maybe I'll be even over-qualified (and bored?) I need some good questions to ask.

Is it inappropriate to ask how they do performance reviews? I found out the hard way that my review at my current job is NOT based on performance, you only get whatever percentage the company gives everyone. So basically the person next to me got the same raise that I did and she is never here (calls in sick, leaves early) and has been written up SEVERAL times.

Thanks for any ideas you can give me!

An employer has agreed to allow an employee to have a flex time schedule. The employee's salary and benefits are prorated -- for example, they work 4 days a week, so they are docked a day's pay for the day off and their vacation time is 8 days a year instead of 10 days). Should the employee also have their base pay reduced for the privilege of having a flex time schedule? Employer thinks if the normal pay scale for the employee is $40,000/yr, then the flex time employee should have a base salary of, say, $35,000/year for this privilege, plus get docked for the days off.

Once before I made a mistake I tried to explain myself he said he didnt want to hear excuses. I wonder if it is better to say nothing now, or appologize.

Gentlemen,

My apologies for any lapse in quality, perceived or otherwise. There is, as always, a reasonable explination.

Nonetheless your comments are duly noted.

Regards,
K.L.

What do you think?

It seems every job I get, the first 12 months are ok and I get along with everyone, but after that I get sick being around the same people for 8 hours everyday. Are there any jobs that pay the bills, but are a job you can work alone for the most part. Truck driving in the only one I can think of.

I hear the burnout rate for nurses is tremendous...I can't imagine getting burned out, but surely the nurses that DID burn out couldn't have thought that either, right?
And social work presents endless opprotunities, but I'm concerned about the pay. I'm not looking to get rich, but I do want to be well enough off where I can afford a home, maybe a child or two, and I don't want to rely on a man for that.
I eventually want to head a non-profit (or something along those lines), or volunteer for doctors without borders...I'm just not sure on which route to take.
Can someone help me decide?
