My daughter (13) has just recieved her progress report for year 8. With the National Average being level 5, she has attained 6c in Geography, Science and History with an additional 5c in Design Technology and 5b in French.

The 6's being the average for the year above and sublevel c being higher than level a....so regardless to say I'm a very proud Dad and though she is over the moon....she's taking it in her stride as "no big deal". Wow!

With these topics in mind, what sort of career could she aspire to. Is there a site or organisation that would match her achievements with possible careers?

I'm moving to alabama in a few weeks. So I quit my job, got ready and am preparing to find a place with my girlfriend when I get up there. Problem is, how will I get accepted? I need a place to live obviously, but I need a job also. I can't get a job unless I have a place to live, but I don't know how I can get a place to live if they require I have a job first? What the hell? How do people move?

I think I am about to get a job offer from a wonderful non-profit. I am leaving the corporate world behind... I would greatly appreciate tips on negotiating a few more K's in the salary if I am, in fact, offered the position. They were pretty clear about what the cap is (and it is substantially lower than what I am accustomed to, coming from the corporate world), but I knew this would be the case. I also heard that there are ways to ask for a wee bit more in a tactful and effective way.... do you have any suggestions? Thank you for your help!

This is my first time working as a retail sales associate. They say they will pay me $7.75 per hour, I have an associates degree. This seems really low to me. Considering the fact that most jobs here in Chicago pay like at least $8 per hour.

I know LEGALLY minimum wage is now $7.50 per hour in Chicago, but considering my education and the fact that I do have customer service, cash handling, and retail inventory experience am I being cheated here?

I started my job 2 weeks at a fast food place at a place called Good Times.
I saw newly hired people got put on the register, so I applied there.
From day 1, I've been working in the kitchen, except one day they trained me on the register and on that's the only day I've worked on the register, which was last week. I haven't been working on the register since, and all the other teenage kids get to.

I HATE working in the kitchen. I am usually in charge of the fries and ice cream. I always burn myself on the fries, today, I got 2 big burns on my arm/hand.

I mess up alot, like dropping the fries, or missing an order on the screen and having to make it late. The manager hates me, she jokes around and is friendly with the rest of the staff but whenever she talks to me, she always is serious, angry, or has a grumpy look on her face. If I ask her to switch my positions, I'll probably get fired (> A <)
I want to quit, but if I do, i'll have a bad reccomendation for my next job

We have the experience, patience and very reliable. We have to be we are responsible for alot. We understand shuffling time to fit everything in, thats what makes us that much better than employing someone just out of school. Secondly we have loads of experience. Myself I am 39, I have experience squeezing out of every cell.
Us mothers going back to work, have computers and can take unfinished work home with us to finish when we put the kids in bed.
If I was an employer, I would hire me. Do younger people ask that to themselves honestly?

I've tried the usual corporate websites going directly through HR. I have almost 15 years experience on the retail side of auto sales - I even had a regional sales manager for Nissan submit my resume to Nissan with a reference and didn't even get a call! Is there someone who works for a manufacturer that could share their secret to getting a job?

The average person at my place of employment stays employed for less than a year. At the end of each year there are more terminations than average employee positions. (eg. 60 people quit in a year and there are only 50 employee positions in the department). So people are constantly being re-hired to replace the losses. In one year a position might be replaced 2 or 3 times. Upper management is continually expressing their concerns about the organizations working conditions and these concerns are shared with line staff who also agree sometimes even more so. The one or two at the very top attempt to stiffle dissent.

So I'm wondering is this just something common in the workplace or should I quit like many others I've worked with have done and try to find something better?

If you tell your employer you are looking for a new job but you don't want to quit until you find one and if your employer hires someone to take your place before you DO find one, would you have "quit" or been "fired"?

I just graduated with a BComm Degree from University of Toronto. I don't have any experience expect a few months as a telemarketer at BMO and sales associate at walmart. I may be offered a job as a teller at BMO... is this a good way to get my foot in the door of the financial industry? I am going for my CFA level 1 exam in dec. Any advice would help. And salary is not much of an issue to me right now.

I have heard the advice that you should never, EVER say anything negative about your current employer while on a job interview. Is this really true?

I am interviewing after only 8 months at my current job. However, the job is awful, my boss is shady and there are some unethical (and even illegal) things going on. Obviously I would never say all THAT...but I was thinking of something along the lines of "I am uncomfortable with some of the questionable practices I have witnessed in my short time with XYZ company, and I am looking for a new position where my strong work ethic and integrity can be upheld."

In addition, before I was hired I was led to believe that the job was something very different from what it really is. Is that a reasonable explanation for leaving after 8 months?

If these kinds of answers are unacceptable, how do I explain my new job search? I don't want potential employers to think I can't commit or settle down, which is exactly what I am hoping to do!
