I am the administrator of a nursing home. My DON has been acting very unprofessionally lately. I gave her a verbal warning for over stepping her bounds on 1-29. Yesterday at 8am she scheduled 2 agency nurse's to cover call-off's for 3rd shift. Agency nurse's are very expensive. My DON is aware that she must clear this expense through me, however she did not. She then had to leave early yesterday at 10a due to a sick child. She had plenty of time to notify me of the need for agency, but chose not to. I feel I should give her a written warning for not following the chain of command and not maintiaing professional standards. Am I right? or am I over-reacting?

We are in the process of moving office and I was amazed at the amount of things I found in my desk pedestal.
The normal things like handcream, tissues, coffee mug, wipes for dirty hands.
Things that are not so normal:
A small wooden Christmas Tree with the baubles
A wind chime in the shape of chicken (ebay purchase)
Large chocolate box with a selection of heachache pills enough to open a shop
A bottle of mouth wash
Various screwdrivers
There are other items but they can remain unmentioned.

How long does it take for a background check to go through? A job I applied for said I would have to get one before I could be hired. My interview was last Tuesday, and on Wednesday morning they had already called my current boss for a reference.
How long would it take to get the background check done?

If I'm using my current supervisor and the previous two as references, do I have to ask them? They're on my resume as my most recent, so the prospective employer is going to contact them anyway. Why would I ask them?

I want to be a freelance investigative journalist/ photographer after I graduate in the Summer. I have been practising my skills with an analogue SLR as well as writing, and wondered what my first step should be?

Do most freelancers have prior experience working for an established organisation? What are the best tips for building up a contacts network? How do I learn the law surrounding how far I can go and what I can cover?

Thanks!
