My boyfriend said whatever I do I may not be satisfied with it. Could he be right? Is there no hope for me?? How can I feel this when my cousins (who live in a third world country) are struggling to hold on to their jobs?! I feel so hopeless...

Well Lennie,

I feel that my husband has the same problem as you,
Many people who were raised internationally, are not content in the work force or in personal relationships.

They frequently want MORE, or Better.

Your parents have pushed you to always strive for success and the very best life has to offer, and now that you have it , you are still unsatisfied.

this is because they didn't teach you how to be happy with the simplicity of life itself.

I believe they push their children to get a job that will pay well , instead of a job that not only pays well but is something you'd enjoy doing as a CAREER. not just a job.

Something that makes you feel full filled.

but the truth may honestly be this,

you do not have the capacity to be happy with being in a job you love, with the pay that you hate.

reason being you and your family will see this as a failure.

but if perhaps you can come to the honest conclusion,

What Do YOU want out of this life?
What will make YOU happy?

What would be your dream come true. Realistically?

House family health children security?

perhaps you can realize that all of your dreams have already come true. or even that it takes time to get things going.

in the mean time be proud of what , who and where you are in this life,

As far as work goes- Most jobs are cruddy, but you can find a job that pays decent, and the hours are decent, benefits ect..

and i have found that its not just feeling good at what you do, but its also liking the people that you work with., not necessarily your boss, but you have to make friends, and your boss has to be professional , and flexibly understanding.

most importantly you need to make the most of what life has to offer, enjoy your weekends, go skiing, hiking, camping, boating, fishing, dancing, go to parks , and have picnics with your friends.
invite the entire family, including remote relatives. and try to take a vacation each year, even if its just to the lake,

Work to live- Do not -Live to work.

hope this gives you a bit of insight.

and hope it helps you understand what you want.

good luck
Meg

You didn't say why you were not happy with your job. I had a job from hell. I just saw the movie "The Devil Wears Prada", that was my boss for 10 years. He constantly would put people down, I guess he felt this elevated himself. I put up with a lot of crap but in turn, eventually, I made decent money and fantastic bonuses (car, cash, whatnot). However, I asked myself, what the hell am I doing here? I moved to another state, got new job-plan on opening my own business next year.

Maybe you have the mentality of an owner and not a worker. Try to gain skills and start your own business. At least if you are busting your hump, it's for YOU & not to make someone else rich.

Good Luck.

you're much less chuffed than your family when you consider which you have extra strategies. consequently there's a miles better tendancy to have self assurance you would be happier doing something else or being someplace else. Its no extra advantageous than the old "The grass is often greener on the different area of the fence" syndrome. Eveyone suffers from it, yet as you grow old you study to take excitement in what you have fairly than covet what you do not have.

Oh my goodness...I hear this everyday and it is very normal and natural. Listen I am a career counselor at at major mid-west university, I have been counseling since 1985. You must understand that 80% of all the workers in the world hate what they do because they are mismatched at work!

You are probably in a career that is pretty opposite of who you really are. .....and/or you are probably working in an area of weakness most of the time in terms of your skills, abilities, values and most importantly your personality type.

Go to http://www.personality-power-for-everyday-living.com and take the free Myers-Briggs test there; then use that site to identify jobs/careers that match your type...than move forward form there. It is all free. You can also use that site to respond for more free career planning advice.

If you do nothing or continue as you have to this point....nothing will change....positiive change in life comes only when we take positive actiion in the direction we really want to go!
All the best!

if you feel that strongly about not liking your job, then try to find out what exactly are the different things that make you dislike the job. if you can pinpoint the problems, you can decide if you want to change the way you do things. or at least give you the courage to look for another job. good luck.

most people dont like their jobs these days. I dont know if it is the job itself, or just some belief fostered by the tv/movie culture about the perfect fun job being out there, or if everyone has always hated having to work to surrvive. but that is what it is, you do the work and use the money to do stuff you like to do, thats why i hate wasting money on junk i dont need, it was too hard to get that money to use unwisely.
