I am a security officer and I have found that smiling and speeking to everyone that passes, no matter how many times they go by a day is very important. It shows that you have respect and courtesy. The receptionist in the building I work in always has a smile on her face. It also looks good the clients that come in from outside the company.

The receptionist is the first impression and should greet people who walk in the door. However, if the person walking in the everlasting revolving door already works with the receptionist then it is appropriate to just look at the revolving door person and use caution and wonder why the revolving door person keeps walking by. For example, in the movie European Family Vacation, Mr. Griswald kept going around the turnabout forever and saying "look kids, there's Big Ben," Mr. Griswald had a choice to get out of the turnabout, but instead caused his spouse and children to get dizzy & the family grew suspicios of Mr. Griswalds choices. I mean "how do you solve a problem like Maria, i mean Mr. Griswald?"

Yes, absolutely, you should smile and greet everyone "new" who comes through the door. If you have coworkers bee-bopping in and out all day, as I do, is it not necessary to stop what you are doing and acknowledge them everytime. However, if you are the receptionist you should be acutely aware of who is coming in and out of that door at all times. YOU are the first impression the company you work for makes on people.

If you get the same person walking in 2 or 3 times, a little nod of acknowledgement is sufficient. You dont have to actually greet them every time they walk by. But you are basically the first person people see and that makes you the 'first impression'.

Obviously, the first time is a must, no matter who they are. It's just to acknowledge them and to let them know you are available if they need assistance. After that, eye contact and a small nod is enough to repeat that acknowledgement. Just make sure you don't have too serious of an expression. An upturned mouth rather than a full smile is more than enough.

I greet people once when they enter then I go on Yahoo Answers and ignore them the rest of the day. When they come back I pretend I'm doing something important on the computer. Unless they speak to me and want something from me.
I've been doing it for 8 years.

It's not about what I prefer it's about what the person who is paying you expects you to do. If you think it's unreasonable, talk to him/her about it and if you don't like the answer find a new position.
