I want to be a freelance investigative journalist/ photographer after I graduate in the Summer. I have been practising my skills with an analogue SLR as well as writing, and wondered what my first step should be?

Do most freelancers have prior experience working for an established organisation? What are the best tips for building up a contacts network? How do I learn the law surrounding how far I can go and what I can cover?

Thanks!

James I think you should work on a local newspaper first , just to get the experience and to get an idea of what you can and shouldn't do. I do a monthly newsletter for our village and I find that very rewarding, however, it is very different from working 'out there' and I also have a month in between each edition to gather enough 'news'. There are a lot of Journalists out there, so you have got to have something that they don't have to make you stand out.
