I work in a group home with adults with developmental disabilities. My job requires me to be at the home from Friday at 3pm thru Monday morning at 9am. I get paid from 6am-11pm but do not get paid from 11pm-6am because I am asleep during those hours while the residents are asleep. However, I'm thinking if I'm required to stay the night there and be on the premisis should anything happen I should be getting paid for those hours regardless of whether I'm sleeping or not. The company I work for disagrees and says they are not required to pay staff for sleep time and has a policy that if the clients wake up they will pay us for the time we are physically working with the clients. Basically I am forced to stay with them the entire weekend but do not get paid to stay with them through the night unless they wake up.

I quit my last job of 3 years as a cook because I have a high risk pregnancy. I thought I could handle not working, but I am going insane at home! Also, I feel bad for my husband being the only one supporting us, I have worked every day since I was 12, so I just feel really weird. I am concerned though, if I go for an interview and tell them I am 4 1/2 months pregnant they might not hire me. On the other hand, if I dont tell them, they will obviously know soon and maybe be upset that I didnt disclose this to them. Anyone else have experience with this at all. I live in Washington state by the way, if that matters at all.

Why is it even LEGAL for a potential employer to do the kind of back ground checks that they do? WHy can they check your credit and find out your money history? Why is this legal and NOT against our rights to privacy??? Was this passed into law at some point - do you think there is anyway to fight it?

It doesn't seem fare - because BAD things do happen to GOOD and Decent people sometimes... And what if you were fired because your former employer was crooked and lied about your job performance so they could get rid of you with out paying unemployment benefits??? I mean how can a person win when employers are crooked and lie? any idea?

..but it's about a three minute walk from the factory line to the break room, should you be able to be away from your work station for 16 minutes to be able to relax for the 10 minutes, or do you just get 4 minutes to sit down and relax? (factory work is such a bummer)

Since more waking hours per week are spent in the workplace and around co-workers, do you now think of your workplace as "home" and co-workers as "family" ? Do you decorate your office/cubicle to resemble "home" with family photos and favorite trinkets etc? How much free time is spent socializing with co-workers as opposed to family and neighbors?

I would like to be an English teacher but as a single mom of a 4 yr. old I cannot possibly support both of us and accomplish student teaching requirements. I have a flair for writing poetry but not prose, so journalism is out. Something that does not require more than a bachelor's degree would be ideal.
