Each of those fields require a lot of education and training to get to the point where you can make ridiculous money. So maybe they are worth the pay in that sense. But teachers require just as much education to become qualified, plus their job is ostensibly more "important" than any you mentioned. Yet teachers get paid terribly in comparison. Doctors get paid a lot because we demand perfection from them (rightly so) and sue them if they slip up. We don't sue our waiter if he messes up our order. Lawyers are overpaid because we demand perfection (perhaps wrongly) from too many other parts of society. If people stop suing companies for getting burned by hot coffee, kids choking on small parts, etc, then the financial incentives for trial lawyers will diminish. As for engineers, programmers, scientists... supply and demand I suppose dictates their salaries, so it's hard to say what constitutes "too much" for them. Just my opinions!

I can say yes that engineers get paid too much, the reason why I say this is because I work in the construction field, I am owner/operator of a foundation company, example I am givivg is engineers get paid 4-5 times as much as I do to make blueprints and designs etc. and yet when I get these drawings I have to spend sometimes hours of my time figuring out what they have already "FIGURED" and trying to figure out proper dimensions they drew to scale, which their scales never work out or their dimensions never work out to their scales, programmers I can say no wrong of because I am ignorant and probably could not functio without their expertise, medical doctors only "practice" medicine therefore are paid too much, scientists have a lot of patience and tremendous knowledge that we never use and have no interests in until they find something and it catches all of ours attention therefore they need more $$, and lawyers are just scum and the bottom feeders of our existence, but I guess we all need them at some point and we will pay them way too much

People should get paid either what they are worth and/or what the market will bear.
Typically the professions mention require extra education and ability; therefore the pool of qualified people to fill the positions is limited thus the demand is higher and the market will pay higher.

All these occupations/professions require education and skills most of us cannot match. It is a free market situation, they will be paid whatever the market demands. In case anyone doubts the ability of these people, try doing without them and see what happens.

NO!
I'm an engineer. My job is very stressful, even though most people see the end result as being extremely simple.
