I received a letter from a debt collector about an old debt... from about 1999-2000. I believe it should be dropped from my credit report by now but the letter says they have just purchased the debt and they can affect my credit rating. Does it matter that they purchased the debt or is it only the age of the debt that matters? I live in Maryland if that helps.

So I work full time and a summer part time job in order to stock up some money for a down payment on a car that I must buy this fall. My boyfriend works 70-80 hours a week during this summer stocking up money for tuition to go back to school in the fall. We both have other bills (none credit card debt related so we are doing okay in that respect). However we just found out that we have to take on more bills that his parents were helping us with since he is a full time student, but now they (his parents) are having financial problems. Basically I am so emotionally drained from working 60+ hours a week and now I have even more financial stress headed my way. PLEASE any tips or tricks to help releave my stress would be grealty appreciated. No time for bubble baths, those are out....and I just cant think anymore..???

The roof of my apt. has been leaking for 5 months. I think they finally got it to stop leaking but the inside where the roof was leaking is all brown and crusty and disgusting. They've offered me to transfer apartments, but I'm so disgusted with the management I want out. I live in PA, can I break the lease? I'm not overreacting, I showed co-workers pics and they couldn't believe it.

We added a long stone wall to our property. The stones have some mortar to hold it together. Is this a capital improvement, such that it can be added to the cost of the house when calculating basis upon sale some day?

When seeking employment and the employer quotes a salary of $35,000 for example, is that quote before all applicable taxes? So, would $35,000 @ 20% tax rate, give or take, actually be a $28,000 salary?

I need serious advise. I am 8 months pregnant. About to deliver in the next few weeks. My husband and I own our own business. Over the last few months, business has dropped considerably. We are lucky if he gets 2 jobs a week now and each job gives us about $300. We also have a 7 year old. We were just about living paycheck to paycheck before (we were able to save a couple hundred that we have since depleted). My cobra payments alone (to cover the delivery) are $400 a month. My mortgage is about $1700. Everything else is pretty typical. Utilities, food, etc. I've tried to cut down on the food but even buying ramon noodles and mac n cheese with some other basics is at least $30 a week. I have two credit cards but they only have a limit of 500 each. And both are at about 200. I've been putting the groceries on there. What would you do?

We're in the US and have relatives in the old country (Eastern Europe). I'm not much in contact with my relatives, but my wive is in touch with hers. ... mainly because of them asking for money. This time this lady is asking for money because one of her kids had to have major dental work. (that was the first story) But then we told her that my wife needs major dental work that costs 20 times more than what they have to pay and we just simply can't afford it.
Now she came back and she says that she needs money for food cuz she lost her job and her husband left her with 3 kids.
I want to help people who need help. We're not doing that great ourselves either, and I have this bad feeling about her and can't help but feel like if we send her money, we're being milked for cash and the little money we have that should be going towards getting us out of debt is getting wasted on God knows what.
What do I do?

I have my hands full this summer with birthdays and baby shower expenses and a vacation to pay for. I'm overwhelmed and still trying to save at the same time. But something on my wish list just recently came on sale. I'm pretty sure that the price can't be beat. I can probably afford to get it at the end of the year but by then it'll be sold out and gone. Should I make the purchase now?

The automatic stay was lifted which gave lender right to protect property. Tenant was notified on June 11 and the lender is requesting property be vacated by July 25. Tenant was not given an exact date when I talked to her on June 11 b/c I did not have one but she knew of the mobile home going back. Will an eviction notice have to be filed or does lender have rights to seize property at will?

Are there any sources for strategies on protecting assets when a terminally ill spouse dies? Especially, if the spouse dies with a large unpaid medical bill? My mother owns a house, two cars, and a small retirement fund and we wish to protect her from the fallout of her husband's death by maybe changing titles, transfering ownerships, etc, to utilize loopholes. Any insights muchly appreciated.

Recently I have received calls from a collection agency that claims to be a law office. The first time they called they said this was the last chance I had to pay them the full balance ($7,200) before they sued me. They suggested that I should ask my family members (which they named off) for the money. I told them that I would ask my family and that the only thing I can currently do is make some type of payment plan. They responded that the only options I have are to pay it off now or get sued.

The second time I informed him that I would not ask my family member for $7,200 and that I would just have to let nature takes it course and they can sue me. Once I told him that he was open to the idea of a payment plan. The catch was that I would have to use my Sears credit card, which I forgot I had, to make a $2,000 payment to them then monthly payments after that.

I want to pay this debt but I am not using a credit card to do it.

My question is what are my option here?
