I would not even have the money to pay any retainers right now, so what are my options if I cannot afford a lawyer to help me file for bancruptcy?

If your income is low enough, you might be eligible to have a lawyer with a social services group file it for you--check out United Way or call a local attorney association. If you do file yourself, please understand that the debtors can come to the hearing and protest....You will have to deal with real, experienced lawyers by yourself.....

Be aware. If you are in the US, then bankruptcy is much harder these days. If you get books from the bookstore, make sure they include the new laws.

Also, go to this site.
http://www.bankrate.com/brm/news/Archive.html

There are tons of articles in there about bankruptcy. You will have to do some searching to find them. All of the articles are mixed together. However, there is lots of good information in that site.

By the way, I do not suggest trying to go at it by yourself. There are so many ways to get tripped up and come out worse than you went in. You need someone who knows the pitfalls and can help you avoid them.

You can certainly file bankruptcy yourself. Go to any bookstore, they will have DIY bankruptcy books that include all of the forms, filing fees, and advice.

Good luck!
