The roof of my apt. has been leaking for 5 months. I think they finally got it to stop leaking but the inside where the roof was leaking is all brown and crusty and disgusting. They've offered me to transfer apartments, but I'm so disgusted with the management I want out. I live in PA, can I break the lease? I'm not overreacting, I showed co-workers pics and they couldn't believe it.

Shouldn't I receive some kind of discount or reimbursement for having to move? That takes time out of my life. The lease was for THAT apartment for a year, not one on another floor or another part of the building . . . ?

They have alleviated your complaint by offering you different premises which are suitable.

You have no grounds to break your lease unless the offered replacement premises are also not in good repair.

Dang, first off, I'm sorry you have to live in such shitty conditions. I know how that is.

But it was smart on their end to offer to transfer apartments because it first makes them look good and they have a legal back up I guess you can say. You know if you went to court, they will def. bring that up.

So with that being said, of course you're always able to break the lease. They can't FORCE you to live there, but they can be assholes about it and sue for the remainder of your rent plus whatever other fees they deem necessary (court costs and etc).

I know how property management works, I'm in that field. Most owners or ownerships don't give a **** as long as they're making money.

If you're that disgusted I suggest that you try this. Once your lease is up ,def. write them a letter or just let them know in some way how displeased you were with the conditions and their management.

Also, reputation is a huge deal so if you see their properties on any of these major sites like craigslist, apartment guide and etc. write them a negative review.

I hope everything works out well and that you don't have too much longer left on the lease!

Sincerely,
Ginna
