Hello,

I am a British student in a first year of a mathematics degree, and have met a Chinese student whom I like very much. She is from the Sichuan province, she is also studying mathematics and her English is good but not perfect.

She knows that I like her a lot, at the moment I would say my feelings are stronger than a fleeting attraction but not love. We have been out to restuarants a couple of times, and I often spend afternoons at her house. I have done some research into Chinese culture and asked her certain questions, and I appreciate that in China friendship comes before romantic involvement. I think this is a good thing, and I like her modesty in her dress and the way she speaks. She says that she doesn't really know what to make of me yet, so at the moment I don't know where things are going.

I am patient and understanding so I have no problems with time, but if anyone could offer advice as to "do's and don'ts" as I try to win her heart, I would be very grateful.

Hey guys, I’m going to work in China starting this summer for about a year, year and a half and I wanted to ask you a question about the salary that they are going to be paying me there. It’s $550 a month in Shanghai and $500 a month in Beijing – is that enough?? Assuming that they will pay for housing.

FYI: The salary is about the same for few different types of work and few different companies (marketing, finance, teaching..). Also, the whole thing is considered an internship, so I’m not expecting to actually “make money” there…I just want to have enough to live comfortably.

How many of you who have been or living in China experience those pesky sales people at the malls who tailed your every steps? These "idiots" will keep asking whether you wanted the item and before you can decide, ask you to pay at the cashier. Can anyone tell me why in China, a customer must pay at the cashier first before collecting the goods unlike in other countries, a customer will bring the goods and paid at the cashier together???? Are the people of China so dishonest that they will shoplift the goods?

In other countries which I have visited, one can pick up many items and walk around the entire floor without paying first. When I have decided which item I really wanted, I would then pay at the cashier TOGETHER WITH the items. This is not the case in China.......even in modern Shanghai!!!
