Hey guys, I’m going to work in China starting this summer for about a year, year and a half and I wanted to ask you a question about the salary that they are going to be paying me there. It’s $550 a month in Shanghai and $500 a month in Beijing – is that enough?? Assuming that they will pay for housing.

FYI: The salary is about the same for few different types of work and few different companies (marketing, finance, teaching..). Also, the whole thing is considered an internship, so I’m not expecting to actually “make money” there…I just want to have enough to live comfortably.

It's difficult to say it's about RMB 3800, a nice decent meal in Beijing or Shanghai cost you about RMB 30-70 but you can get a meal for as low as RMB 5, will there be any improvement on salary?

The salary is about accurate for a medium size city BUT NOT for Beijing. Bohla - you are waaaay off on your numbers..

You should be earning at least 6-8k for Beijing unless you are in a rural area far away from the main city..

If So, 16-20 periods per month (45 Mins Per Period) with alot of opportunitiy for overtime you could bring it 5-6k with no problem.

Are you going through a program or direct through a school?

Popular Misconception! You absolutely need a license to drive one. If you crash into a Chinese and dont have Insurance or License, you don't leave China until you have paid a pantload. (Personal Experience 7-years teaching abroad in China)

the issue with answering this question is that there are particularly no regularly occurring salaries in China. A western knowledgeable and especially qualified technician could earn a sturdy income, whether that's possibly that a close-by computing device technician could earn slightly subsitance salary. Sorry, won't be able to be greater effectual than that.

I agree with the postings stressing the notion that you will be at the limit of making it. You will encounter all sort of hidden costs that you have not thought of.
What about medical and dental costs? Who will cover those for you? What medical facility will you have access to?

Keep in mind that medical costs (for a foreigner) are very similar to those in the States (same for the dental work). So the US$550 is not going to be that comfortable of a living.

Having said all this, it is up to you. Most salary related situation is very much based on expectations. It is up to you at the end of the day.

There are many costs of setting up a place in Beijing that will stretch your budget. So you might want to negotiate the deal some more.

They are the ones getting the better deal - not you! You should be asking minimum $1000.00 per month and insist they pay you every week. A lot of employers pay up to 2 months after you have worked, and will demand you to worl 10-12 hours 7 days, and maybe give you 1 day off per month. I am serious, you need to be on top of this and make sure you contact your country's consulate upon arrival, let them know where you are working, etc. Let the employers know that you have informed the consulate - this way no shady games being played. Do NOT live on site - you will have no freedom. Get a scooter - you don't need a license to drive one of those, so you can leave and live far enough away so they don't keep you at work late. Get a local cell phone and put in the consulate number for ICE(in case emergency)!
Dress down, don't be showy, be humble and courteous, even when they are not! Other than that, you should be ok! Check in with consulate periodically!

Newwave 2 - I live and work in Shanghai before that Beijing, $500-$550 is going to be stretching it, especially with the Olympic coming up things are getting very pricey in Beijing and they are only going to get worse, unless they provide you housing and utilities, if this is part of the package than your salary will do, if it is not part of your salary it will stretch you financially, please send me an email if you get the chance I can give you some good facts and figures as far as the cost of living

As long as you don't drive or take taxis, entertain friends, and make sure you don;t need to rent an apartment. It should be ok.

The average local guy pay is about rmb2500 to 3500 per month.

BTW, make sure that it is net salary, otherwise, you will have to pay tax every month.

$550=4235RMB

Rent is about 800RMB/month for a ok place
Meals = 30days X 3Meals X 30RMB/meal = 2700RMB
Utilities = 80RMB/month
Transportation and pleasure spending is whats left over...

So, it looks to be tight. But if you teach, they should provide room and board.

Once again, this is base on good standards.. if you are a bit more frugal, it can be done with much less.

From my expat experience there, I expense all my living cost including my many outings with clients.
