CULTURE SHOCK! ...Local people speak Shanghainese and they talk loud like yelling but actucally they are just whispering friendly within 1 foot distance while you are wondering whether they are quarralling (in the first minute when you see them) and soon you can see they laugh together and continue yelling to each other!
Then, you gain weight because you would eat too much in the first 2 weeks especially the food is cheap there and every new friend you know wants to bring you to new place to try good food and drinks!
Then, you will be very eager to learn Chinese! Because you want to make use of your holidays to walk around China, going to other cities / places - more adventures, more funs!!!!!!
No matter what the turn out you get (could be good or bad), you would gain some unforgetable memories and your experiences in China would add a lot more spices in your life.

I live in Shanghai, you can expect it to be very modern, public transportation to be great but very crowded at times, the buildings are very tall, it is a relatively clean city when compared to other cities in China, English signs, very modern, if you want it you can find it, it will be very hot and humid, make sure you drink (bottled water), the students will be good and bad, behavior is sometimes a problem (taught for a long time now)

An ESL teacher is an English as a Second Language Teacher - in other words, they are teaching the English language to people who can not speak it. An English teacher assumes his or her students already know English, and they focus on teaching the grammar, the literature -- the culture as it is expressed in the language. Does this help?

A very crowded metropolis and bad traffic. They are neither prejudice against foreigners nor friendly.
Other things to mentally prepare for. Poor etiqutte and bad manners. Things such as litering, spitting, squawting, urinating in public are not uncommon.
