1) TRAVEL INSURANCE!!!

2) Contacts at the US Embassy

3) Credit Card

4) Emergency Contacts on hand

5) Cell Phone and or two way radio in case you and the people you are travelling with get split up.

6) Understand the communities you will be going to so you know how to respect their customs and laws. Trust me you don't want to be held in a Chineese court being arraigned for a charge which you never knew was against the law.

Ohhh Hong Kong! I just love Hong Kong! Bring a travel book for sure so you don`t miss any of the best spots (I forgot mine and missed out on a lot). Also, a good, up to date map will help, as it is easy to get lost. Bring a very good pair or walking shoes and camera. You can rent cell phones there and don`t forget a shopping list of things you want to buy cheap. Check out Mon Kok Market on Kowloon.

And when you get there, buy and octopus card (prepaid card that works at many convienience stores as well as most forms of transportation) they are very convinient and help with getting around speedily and without hauling around a lot of cash. Have fun!

Take some money and have small English/Chinese phrase book dictionary, they are in Mandarin and Cantonese. Put your valuables such as $$ and passport in a pouch hung from around the neck and carried under your shirt.

Do not listen to that dolt that recommended a knife!
Hong Kong is a civilised, sophisticated place that has everything you will need. The usual precautions are all you need such as keeping phone, passport and camers safe. Have fun.
