Well try looking on contact is some universities. I have a friend who teach English for more than one year in a university. He was paid 3000 yuans and had his appartment on campus paid.
Otherwise if you can come to China it is easier to find some schools who needs a foreigner to teach English. Myself I taught English even though I'm French in 2 middle school last year.

It depends on how much risk you are willing to take.
Use whois.sc to check out who really owns the web site you are getting your job from. . It will tell you how long they have been in business, who owns it, if company or person, and if Chinese or domestic company.
Avoid Chinese recruiters, agents, for profit education consulting companies!
If you go with a Chinese recruiter or agent ((( like one of the posters here)) then you risk not being placed in a legal working environment.
If you are from the USA, call the people at http://journeyeast.org they offer free pre-trip consulting specifically for ESL teachers and can obtain your visa for you. .
The following link provides comprehensive information about the various ways you could go to China for teaching english, choose the best one for yourself.

Check esl sites like Dave's ESL Cafe. Check expat sites in China, they often have job listings. Check www.chinaschoolreview.net to see if your potential employer has had a lot of complaints against them. Make sure you research your employer. You don't want to get here and find out that your employer isn't licensed to hire foreigners. This happened to a friend of mine.

if i were you, i will go to Japan, Korea or Taiwan. They pay much better. But if it is the Chinese culture that you want to explore, then, go to Taiwan. they pay about NT 60,000 a month. You can save quite a lot if you are not big into the partying scene. the link is here:
www.tealit.com this is where the foreign community in Taiwan communicates. Almost all are English teacher.

I don't think someone who askes the question, "Where do they get the dogs they cook in China & how is it prepared?" should be teaching in China.
