It is actually called Wai Tan 外滩 by the Chinese, but the Bund is situated on the Huang Pu river, on the Pu Xi side of Shanghai, made up of a row of buildings built in the early 1900's, it is called the Bund b/c "The word "Bund" means an embankment or an embanked quay, and comes from the Urdu word band, meaning an embankment, levee or dam (a cognate of English terms, bind and band, German term, bund, etc" check out the first website, give a great hisptory of the Bund

"BUND" is an Urdu/Persian/Hindi word meaning an embankment.It was constructed during the British colonial period to prevent the re-curring flooding of the west bank of the Huangpu River.
