There are probably over a hundred thousand Chinese characters and there is no basis like the alphabet for this language, though there is something like that in the phonetic symbols called "Pin Yin". For the actual characters, you can actually tell from the looks that there is no basis. They are made up of strokes.

There are names for each of the strokes though. For instance, a stroke that goes from left to right is called a 横 "heng" which translates into horizontal, and 竖 "shu"which translates into vertical. There are also things like a stroke from diagonal left top to diagonal right bottom is called 捺 "na" and to the other direction is called 撇 "pie".

They are very complex and I have only listed you the basic ones. There are some "strokes" which actually take up to 3 seconds to write down.
