Replacing Chinese characters... the Koreans have done it with Hanguel, the Vietnamese have done it with Chu Nom.
What about the Chinese, did they ever try to replace characters with phonetics (i.e. pinyin)... and will they ever try to do so?

I am a student currently on my gap year from university studying in Beijing. My study period here is supposed to end in July and I am due to return to Britain to finish my degree. However, I have decided that I want to defer for a year and work in Beijing. Once I have completed my study period and changed my visa I am unsure of exactly what kind of work I want to do, although I know that I don't want to teach. Does anyone know of any job agencies that would be willing to recruit me? I unfortunately don't have any specific qualifications such as business because my degree is just in Chinese language. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I just got back from a trip in China. While waiting at the lobby of a 5 star hotel, I saw this well dressed man,(obviously a Chinese from the way he speaks) spitting onto the carpet of the hotel. Spittons has long been removed from many places, but old habits die hard. In the efforts to be more civilised (wen ming), the Chinese government have put up posters against the don't of personal habits - and spitting is one of them. I wonder when the Chinese improve on this aspect of their culture.
