Been there a couple of years ago. You will regret if you don't visit the Great Wall, Forbidden City , Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven,Tienamen Square and the hutongs. Do not rush and take you own time to absorb the rich culture and historical relics here. These places have been so well-preserved. It is a not to be missed experience to look at the architectural marvels that existed centuries ago. Do remember- take lots and lots of photos for memories.

I have been to Beijing many times, and my first thought is that the Great Wall is a must! I agree with Mr. W, Si Ma Tai is the best section, IMO. I was there for a sunrise once...just amazing! There are few people on that section of the Wall, and it's a bit more rugged and adventurous than some of the other sections. It should take you about 3 hours to get there from the center of Beijing.
Other than that, the Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven are quite nice. They are peaceful places in a way. Forbidden City was ok, but not my fav.
For an experience, try the rickshaws...just be careful to find the price ahead of time. If you are really up for an adventure, rent a bike and see the city that way.
Tiananmen is alright. While it is big, I didn't find it extraordinary.
Wangfujiang street is interesting, and you can do some shopping there, as well as at Silk Street (not a street at all, but a big building).

I visited Beijing a couple times while I was teaching in China. I hated it at the beginning of my first trip but I came to enjoy the city.
I found Tian'anmen Square very intimidating (although it was built for that). I was there during a visit by Castro so there was lots of fanfare.
I visited the Great Wall (very cool), the Forbidden City (overrated in my opinion, expensive, and I enjoyed the imperial palaces in Shenyang better), the Temple of Heaven in Tiantan Park (quite nice), and a bunch of museums. The Natural History Museum is a bit freaky (pretty neat exhibits though) and the military museum is outright frightening (weapons aimed at you, although they're in glass cases).
I found the embassy quarters really interesting. I had to go to the Canadian consulate and it's cool to see the embassies. Be warned though- don't dwaddle around - there's security (and who knows what else) watching you - and they have machine guns.
My favourite experience was drinking beer at the 3rd Annual Wangfujin Dajie Beer Festival. It was my last day (of a three day visit in the city) and I was museumed out. It was rather serreal drinking Belgium beer under a patio umbrella and people watching.
I found the trick was not to overplan. My first visit was way too busy to soak everything in. Consequent visits were shorter (a couple attractions each day and lots of time to soak in the atmosphere at Tian'anmen Square and various gardens).

I have been to Beijing many times before. There are so many to see there, but I like strolling inside of the "old Hutong" very much. It is there you feel you are so close with the city's history. Therefore each time I travel to Beijing I would usually book a "Hutong trip" with a rick-shaw that will take you to those nice old small lanes.

Great Wall at Si Ma Tai, unlike the rest of the tourist traps on the Great Wall, like Ba Da Ling and Mu Tian Yu, Si Ma Tai is quiet, peaceful, still in some ruins, breathtakingly beyond description, I slept there on the Wall twice, gorgeous sunsets and sunrises
