they are raised for the purpose of eating, often treated very poorly, I have seen them hanging in butcher shop windows, here are some sites on the subject, I have had it twice, once cooked with red and green peppers and once in a soup

The dogs are raised to be eaten. The meat is most commonly cooked in a stew, but in some cities in the south you can see whole roasted dogs being sold from sidewalk stands in the evening. They'll gladly hack off a leg for you to munch on as you stroll along.

To start with I don't eat dog and I have one that I love.
dogs breed like crazy here in china.
they use them for guard dogs in most houses and all factories. since they breed the factories want to keep a supply of the dogs. they do not take care of them like shots and proper care so they let them breed to keep all they need. they don't live long as in the western countries.
then the factory's sell the ones they don't want.
but my dog run out the door last night and I had to catch it before some one grabbed it and put it in the pot.
when the weather is cold they will eat more dog.
On one street where I live all restaurants sell dog meat and you can buy it at the market.

Some are raised simply for that purpose. I'm not sure how it's cooked.
