Travel - 30 October 2007

Hi,
I am arriving at JFK on 16th Nov night (9:40PM) by Delta Airlines.
My next flight from JFK on 17th Nov morning (10:40AM) by Emirates Airlines.
My whole trip is on a single ticket, as the airlines share a code.
Now, as my layover is about 13 hrs, can I do a through baggage checkin, so that I can go outside the airport lighter.
If yes, how should I confirm that they actually have taken care of my baggages for the onward journey.
If no, can I collect the baggage and again check them in 13 hrs before the Emirates flight departure.

I am an American. I live in Ohio. I am planning to travel to Windsor, Canada on the 16th of November. I will be driving. I'm not a religious person. He lived most of his life in the US and is a successful business man here, and we've been together for 2 1/2 years now. he never asked me this question before untill now and it feels like a requirement. im from Peru and i looked at questions about this: britts say patriotic stuff like "the continent is aislated" and European people call you British people xenophobic and egocentric.
the only reasonable answer i read said that it is because the British pound is stronger than the euro but i still don't understand exactly WHYYYY??
