It's always been a passion of mine to drive along the red dusty roads of the NT & having the freedom to stop anywhere I can.

straight up the middle, i have only been as far down as mataranka which is a 4 n half hour drive from my place in darwin, mataranka has some beautiful swimmin places, thermal pool n bitter springs both are nice. about half hour from katherine is the cutta cutta caves, worth a look. next is katherine, they have a thermal swimmin hole there, they also have a gorge, unless ur going to take a chopper or boat cruise don't bother driving out there because u won't see anything, i made that mistake but apparently the boat cruise is great.
just out of katherine is edith falls , quite nice out there, next is pine creek, not much there, next is douglas daley region, where they have hot n i ment hot springs, nice for a dip, next is adelaide river, u can see the buffalo from croc dundee movies stuffed inside the bar, then theres batcholar, not much there but it leads out to the lithfield nation park where the water falls are, florance, buley rock pools, tolmer, wangi, also the magnetic termites, next is berry springs, my favourite place to swim, then theres noonamah, nothing spec then keep goin on to darwin!
hope that helps.

Yes there is plenty of tracks you can drive on and still un sealed roads in the desert but you have to be very well organised. people have died out there because they weren't well equipped and never leave your vehicle to walk if you break down always carry plenty of water and report where you are going. That red dirt gets into everything and its rather hard to clean up. Stay right away from those water ways and rivers those croc s can't be seen. Try Kakadu but if you go further into Arnham land, you need a permit

The main roads are the Stuart highway which goes from Darwin to Alice Springs and on south to Adelaide. There is the Barkly Highway which goes east from Three Ways (north of Tennant Creek) to Queensland and there is the road west from Katherine to Western Australia. There is another sealed road from the Barkly Homestead on the Barkly Highway to Cape Crawford - 375km between stops. Turn right at Cape Crawford for Borroloola and left for Daly Waters on the Stuart Highway. There is another sealed road east from Darwin into Kakadu National Park and one west from Alice Springs to Uluru. That's it for bitumen.

If you really want to explore a dirt road and you have a good car and plenty of supplies, head northwest from Alice Springs through Yuendumu to Rabbit Flat in the Tanami Desert and then on to Halls Creek in WA. You can get back to the NT on bitumen from Halls Creek. Rabbit Flat is as remote a pub as you are ever likely to find.

Many of the non-sealed roads go through Aboriginal land and you will need a permit to go there. It is not difficult for travellers to get permits but you will have to obey any rules regarding off-road activities and camping.

You can stop anywhere you like on the long, hot dusty road, but I'm afraid there's a long way between towns etc in the NT.

emta3 got it all - the road is the Stuart Highway... there's not many other options to go by if you want to see most of the NT.
