Hi,
I am arriving at JFK on 16th Nov night (9:40PM) by Delta Airlines.
My next flight from JFK on 17th Nov morning (10:40AM) by Emirates Airlines.
My whole trip is on a single ticket, as the airlines share a code.
Now, as my layover is about 13 hrs, can I do a through baggage checkin, so that I can go outside the airport lighter.
If yes, how should I confirm that they actually have taken care of my baggages for the onward journey.
If no, can I collect the baggage and again check them in 13 hrs before the Emirates flight departure.

Expecting a detailed answer.
Thanks

when you check in with Delta, make sure they check the bags through--the onward EK flight # and your final destination should be on the claim check they give you.

Emirates does not code-share with Delta; Emirates' code-share partner in the US is Continental.

If you are arriving in JFK that does not originate in the US, you'll have to claim your luggage before clearing customs and immigration and you will not be able to re-check your luggage for a flight 13 hours later. (Emirates' counter is open only when flights are departing -- it is not open 24/7).

If you're arriving on a US flight, you can ask the Delta personnel, when you check in at your departure airport, if they can check your luggage all the way through. Emirates and Delta will not be in the same terminal, so your chances are not good.

And, do you really want your luggage sitting in a "holding area" at JFK overnight? If so, I strongly suggest purchasing travel insurance to cover any missing items, including all the luggage!

Good luck!

Since this is an overseas flight to one of the most hostile areas of the world, you might have to stay in the airport for 13 hours. Your baggage should transfer to your next flight.

The best advice would be for you to call JFK and explain your situation and ask them what their new rules are and follow them to the letter.

I do not know from where you original departure city, but 13 hrs at an airport???!!!!
You should have taken a red-eye, and arriving between 6 and 7 AM, thay would have live you 3 hrs for transfer.
I am sorry for your inconvenience, but I doubt you can go out of the airport, but again check with them when you arrive at JFK.

If the Airlines share a code you should be able to check your bags all the way through to your final destination without any problem.

If not, you are able to check your bags in and still leave the airport with no problem - though you are not usually allowed to check in you, or your luggage until two hours before the flight if it isn't international, and if it is international you are allowed to check in a lot earlier. You would have to check with the Airline you are flying with to see how far in advance you can check in.

I hope this helps.

You shouldn't have to collect your baggage at JFK.... it should automatically be transferred to the correct connecting flight.
