The tried and true tourist route is the coast, and the little towns north an south are well used to tourists, have lots of facilities and are generally very welcoming.
Another fascinating area with great facilties are the Blue Mountains ~ the small towns are very pretty and very interesting to visit.
Zucchinis does have a very good point about the inland towns ~ there may be some resentment towards tourists who are not sensitive about the situation many rural people find themselves in after years of drought.
If you do visit these places ~ and the land, scenery and history of western NSW are fantastic ~ it might be wise to be careful what you do and say, and where.
Otherwise, have a great trip :-)
Cheers :-)

We went road tripping from Melbourne to Broken Hill a few years ago. I'm not sure why, since I didn't expect to like the town. All I'd ever heard about it was that it's a mining town (so I thought it would be dirty and ugly) and it was boring, boring, boring. That I heard from other kids who'd gone on school camp there. Of course there is nothing like a school trip to destroy the charm and enjoyment of anywhere or anything. We ended up having a great time and I really liked the town. I recommend going to the info centre cafe and having some quandong tart. Oh yes, that was worth going all the way there for! We stayed at the pub opposite. The beds were too soft and the place was too loud, but it was cheap and we didn't have much money. I think we lived on steak sandwiches for the whole trip. Except for that quandong tart. Yum, yum. Broken Hill also has lots of beautiful art galleries.

Definately the north coast of NSW- if you like markets check out bangalow and the channon but ask locals when its on - only once a month. There's a big prawn at Ballina and Byron Bay is famous for its beauty, food and entertainment - just don't get too drunk and pass out on the beach - not safe. Just common sense really
Blue mountains is another must see. There's always the big pineapple in Coffs Habour. Take the Pacific highway up the coast its a great drive with lots of little towns and tourists drives. Nabiac has a motorcycle museum - depends what your in to!!
But if you want real outback - head west through the blue mountains to lithgow and then on to Bathurst and keep on going... just watch out - don't be like those tourists in Wolf Creek! Like I said common sense people.

Hi,
The three best things to do is to:
1. Go to the NSW Tourism website: http://www.visitnsw.com.au and look up some of the regions your interested in visiting.
2. Just get in the car and just drive anywhere and plan your trip as you go along.
3. If your interested in meeting some the real local people best place to go is in the outback like around Broken Hill, Bourke, Dubbo, Tamworth, Griffith, Lighting Ridge, Singleton so you get to experience the real Australian bush and outback and people.
They are probably the three top suggestions I would reckonmend to people travelling around Australia in any state or territory.
Also the best thing to do is to ask a local! Because they live there and work there and know the area and are the best people to ask!
Hope this helps you with your question.
Thank you
From Clint

Any that you wish too. Do you have a general plan on where you want to go? Most towns should have plenty of accom available, so you shouldn't have too much trouble in just doing a spurr of the moment type trip.
Wagga, (sth), Dubbo, (west) and tamworth (north) are the 3 major rural towns that im sure you will visit.
Prefer the coast or inland?
Avoid Walgett.

Oh, ya, you have to be careful about kissing ANYBODY in freakin mormon town! happy valley my butt! (see? I can't even swear anymore!) I live in the city just south of there and they are even MORE uptight. I mean, you can kiss your cow, but if a girl kissed a girl? You'd think they were all having a coronary! I think they'd all die if a guy kissed a guy! Seriously. There are gay guys here that can't admit it and have to get married and have a jillion kids! I suppost the lesbians are that way and after marriage, the mans like, wow, she won't give me any, I'm gonna go get me some child. seriously, they cause a lot of perverts to come out of the woodworks. You can't even SAY sex or boobs or anything without someone flushing and quickly changing the subject. Anyway, I could go on.... I wouldn't want to get stuck in Needles CA, just the name makes you wonder. I'm already stuck in Springville UT. I love it here though despite the weirdness.

Are you SURE you want to do that????????
If I were you, I'd choose very carefully....
NSW is a big place. In what general area are you planning to go? The north-east corner is beautiful, hilly, with some remnant rainforest, beautiful beaches... The coast generally I understand to be pleasant and friendly, but personally I'd keep away from the drought-stricken western cattle towns...
Come on someone, tell me I'm wrong.

Stay off the main highways and check out any small places you come to. There are some wonderful little spots. The pub at Conargo is worth spending the night at and there are many equally interesting places all over the State.

There is an awesome new website www.bepacked.com this site has a map on which you can search by region. It is really clever. Read the manual in the forum on the website to get the idea. It's good to see that a Australian company came up with this idea.

go to http://www.visitnsw.com.au/
and select the region you want. It will give you just about every town you will come across in that area and what interesting sites and attractions.
I use it myself to look at places I want to see on my driving holidays
