My wife and I are about 40 and trying to decide between a few different cities in the Western US for a week-long vacation. We're not golfers or major athletes, but we like biking and hiking. We like to spend some time at the beach. We like culture, but want to spend more outdoors than indoors. What are the best locations for a hotel for this kind of vacation -- close to a beach but not too far from the culture the city offers?

Does anyone have a suggestion of a good place to stay half way between LA and SF on Hwy 101? I want to break up the driving and do half one day and half the other but I'm not sure where a good place is to stop. I'd really appreciate any suggestions. I'll be traveling alone so I'd like someplace that's very safe and single traveler friendly.

3 Army soldiers and 1 Marine coming from Iraq and going to Australia for R+R for 2 wks. What city or area should we go to for a good time? We were told The Gold Coast is where we need to go. After last years terror plot with small liquid explosive. They put a ban on bringing on any liquids that is in excess of 3 oz. I'm going away to see my family, & i wanted to bring some cologne of mine. Can because it's bigger than 3 oz. could i still check it & put it in my "non-carry on"?

We're going from Manchester to New York with Delta Airlines in a week. According to Delta Airlines' website, we'll be in a Boeing 767-300. Now according to their confirmation letter, we'll have "personal entertainment, with a range of films, music and games available". Having searched for pictures of the said plane, I see no personal screens! So what do they mean? And is there more than one boeing 767-300, or just the one? Sorry but I have no idea about these things!

We will be attending a conference and touring the area in October. We will also be going to Cape Cod, Rhode Island, and lower Vermont and New Hampshire. We love to find small mom and pop cafes and interesting sites beyond the main tourist attractions. We are history buffs, if that helps.
