3 Army soldiers and 1 Marine coming from Iraq and going to Australia for R+R for 2 wks. What city or area should we go to for a good time? We were told The Gold Coast is where we need to go. Is that true? Also if anyone wants to play tour guide and show a couple of good mates around let me know. It would be nice to know a friendly face when we got there so if anyone wants to chat it up just email me.

im in the army in iraq right now and i lived in sydney for four months before i joined the military. i haven't been to many other places in austarlia but sydney was better than any other place i've been to in the world. bondi beach might be a good place to stay. its one of the most famous beaches in the world. you wont be near all the clubs downtown but its a short train/taxi ride into the city. that way you can nurse your hangovers on the beach the next day. by the way, its legal for women to go topless on the beach;) another beach, just 5 or 10 min away from bondi, is coogee beach. its more of a college scene with a small strip of bars right on the beach. thats where i spent most of my time. have fun! i miss the aussie women!

p.s. i just remembered its the middle of winter, so the beach scene wont be happening. sydney still has an awesome nightlife though.

Forget the Gold Coast, it is full of kids, families and retirees. Sydney is the place to go for the sort of action you are looking for. There is plenty to do and see in and around Sydney and the night life is very good indeed. Sydney has always been a favourite R&R spot for visiting servicemen and when you get there you will quickly understand why.
