You 'd better come to Guangzhou at normal time, that means any time except April and October. Then you can save a lot of money. There are some clubs and places of interest in Guangzhou too.The clubs mostly located in the center of the city. Some attractions like temple, sight-seeing along the Pearl River (the most famous ) at night , Five Goats park etc. are worthy to visit.

Don't know about the best time to fly to Guangzhou but don't ever fly there during the second half of April and October. that's when the Chines Import and Export Commodities Fair, better known as the Canton fair is on.

During those periods, the city is filled with businessmen and hotels all raise their rates. Getting a room is almost impossible even in the mosrt expensive hotels. Some businessmen even stay in Shenzhen or Hong Kong to attend this fair. Even restaurants charge more.

In Guangzhou in spring (March to April) or autumn (Sept to October & half of november). The weather is perfect for visitors who don't like extreme weathers. Take Train (Canton railways) from Hongkong to Guangzhou it takes around 3 hrs. by train.
