Does anyone have a suggestion of a good place to stay half way between LA and SF on Hwy 101? I want to break up the driving and do half one day and half the other but I'm not sure where a good place is to stop. I'd really appreciate any suggestions. I'll be traveling alone so I'd like someplace that's very safe and single traveler friendly.

Santa Barbara is about 95 miles north of LA, and San Luis Obispo is beyond that - Google up hotels/motels in either town, and then do a MapQuest on mileage and also directions to San Luis Obispo [I think it's on 101 but am not sure]. Both towns have nice clean places to stay, most major 'chain' motels can be found, and they have brightly lit parking and you'd be safe there...stop early in the day, however...try to get booked in before 5:00 p.m. Both towns are interesting places...old California missions and nice shopping and restaurants. If you're traveling alone, try for a motel with either its own restaurant or one w/in walking distance...so you won't be out driving at night in a strange town! Bon voyage!

I agree with the answers that said San Luis Obispo, as that is about halfway, Santa Barbara is beautiful but too close to L.A., another place you might consider is Pismo Beach. It's just a little further south than SLO and right on the coast. Another good place is Morro Bay, also on the coast right near SLO, and it's also very near the Hearst Castle, probably the best tourist destination in central California. If you go past SLO there really aren't any good places to stay until you get to the Monterey-Carmel area if you're coming from LA, but from there you aren't too far from San Francisco, although it is quite beautiful there.

san luis obispo is approximate halfway point on 101. Great college town. I have driven from SF to Santa Barbara in one day, but is a bit far. Because at that point you are only 100 miles from LA and i would just keep driving.
