I have been trying to learn about the history of the early church, and when reading about the Gnostics, (1st century Christians) I discovered that they actually believed in a metaphorical savior, not a literal one. This led me to explore earlier beliefs and I learned that almost all dietys from early pagan religions have a Jesus like story in them. See the link below for a list.

Just wondering how Christians account for this?

Please don't invoke the devil clause, unless you have to because these religions predated Christianity and in some cases Judaism.

Ok, so I know this sounds weird but I've seen spirit beings my whole life. I"m not scared of them...well sometimes I am.

I've moved into this new house. This presence has showed itself to me three times. First when I didn't live there, in the reflection of the TV as a girl with a fringe and long blonde hair. Then the second and third time with the same hair but black. she's just standing (once she was sitting) there regarding me, almost intrigued or watching me sleep. I can feel her there and when I open my eyes, she smiles at me. The last two times I saw her she visually presented herself to me in the darkness of my room late at night. Last night it was 12.30am.
My cat sits there and stares at her too when she appears. I don't know what she wants and now feel safer sleeping with my light on, but I'm intrigued to know what she wants.

PLSE NOTE: ONLY GENUINE ANSWERS...NO RELIGIOUS COMMENTS, ONLY SPIRITUAL AND PRODUCTIVE ANSWERS PLEASE

Is it right to go on tv wearing $2000 dollar suits and thousands in jewlery and tell poor people that if they send them money(watch TBN for a display of gaudy jewlerly and flashy suits)....God will bless them? After they leave the studio they get chauffered or drive their luxury cars to their multimillion dollar mansions...while a widowed grandmother sends them half her pension check..looking for the "financial breakthrough" that they promised her..is that right?

Christianity is about 2000 years old. Since only good and faithful Christians go to heaven, what happens to all the uncounted millions of people who lived and died before. Are they all condemned to eternal perdition through no fault of their own.

Atheists? Why do you always attempt to "teach" and "enlighten" others and try to save them from their "delusions" and their "virus of the mind" when most of them live no more or less of a normal/decent life than, say, an atheist or agnostic? Aren't you being as annoyingly fanatical as any overly fervent Christian?

1) Zeus. Greek god who could shoot thunder bolts at people he didn't like.

2) Jesus. Some dude killed by the Romans about 2000 years ago; the image of him nailed to a piece of wood is the symbol of a close-minded cult known as "Christianity". He amused himself by telling highly embellished fantastical stories to his followers, most of whom have not yet gotten the joke.

3) Almighty Ra. One of the mighty gods of the Ancient Egyptians.

4) Ganesha. Hindu god with the head of an elephant.

5) Buddha. A fat man who formed one of the more peaceful religions.

6) Reverend X. Eccentric public access TV show host, whose profanity-filled shows can be seen on YouTube.

And last but not least...

7) Count Chocula. A vampire who makes chocolate-flavored cereal with little chunks of marshmallow in it.

I'm a strict Count Chocotarian myself, but what about you guys?

I have been born and raised lutheran but I am thinking of looking for a new church. There are no other lutheran churches around so I thought I might try something new. We prefer a more traditional service.

It's a fairly trivial thing to be willing to die for one's own beliefs, but how many of you out there would be willing to die protecting someone else's right to beliefs you don't share?

We know more than 2600 people died in the collapse of the World Trade Centers. We know 125 died at the Pentagon, and over 250 died on the 4 planes. Together, close to 3000 people lost their lives.

Based on current religious statistics, it's reasonable to assume that more than half the victims were Christian, so it would be fair to say that at least 1500-2000 people were praying to god to save them that morning.

In addition, all around the world millions, if not BILLIONS of Christians were watching the events unfold on TV, and undoubtedly were praying to god to save the lives of these poor, innocent victims.

So, IN UNISON, BILLIONS of Christians were desperately pleading to god to save innocent people from being crushed under trillions of pounds of concrete. This may have been the largest collective appeal to god at any time in human history.

What did god do?

Nothing.

He hasn't even helped his favored Christian children catch the perp.

Exactly how does praying to god help, again?

You see, this is one of the main reasons I don't believe in God. For me to believe in any kind of intelligent, omniescent deity, I would have to believe that a child who dies painfully and miserably, hours after being born, was made that way for a reason. I would have to believe that people with AIDS are tortured and killed by God because they committed the sin of unprotected sex. I would have to believe that my girlfriend has eczema (developed at 2 months old, at which point she nearly died), allergies to everything imagineable, and a broken family for a reason.

I know that not all theists believe that God is active and has a hand in everything. But, I'd like to hear from you if it so happens that you do believe this.

I want to know why. I want to know why you think that a benevolent God would torture and kill people for no reason, none at all, while still sparing people who commit horrible crimes in his name.

It just seems that a lot of people keep asking the same question about how Christmas can be a christian holiday celebrating the birth of Christ if that wasnt even his actual bday?
Do you really think that it is a legit argument that it isnt his exact birthday? Can you not celebrate a persons bday on a day that isnt their actual bday?

Anyone that has asked this question, yet celebrated their bday, like going out to lunch or having someone give them a present, not on their actual bday, is rather a hyppocrite, dont you think?

A common misconception in theism is that people without faith are bad, kill babies, etc., because they have "no moral foundation". The truth is quite the opposite. I know many non-theists, including myself, who live good lives, never cheating or stealing or killing, for a few examples.

This being true, the only difference between you and me is that you concede to a higher power, and while I'm not contesting your choice, I have to wonder why it's alright to assume that people who are exactly the same except for the faith detail are "going to different places when they die."

I know what christianity says about salvation and reaching heaven, so no answers along that line are needed. I am asking YOU, as an individual, why you really believe that a good person should burn? If they chose to live a life of good, one that doesn't stray far, if at all, from the values that christians hold, why is it alright for you to assume they are going to hell?
