Since Christ's resurrection, and his subsequent authority over death, those who die in Christ become ' absent from the body and present with the Lord'. The bible further mentions that to 'live is Christ, to die is gain.'...which indicates the spirit of the dead person resides with Christ after death, for what 'gain' could be mentioned if one was merely 'sleeping' in the grave. The spirit of someone who dies knowing Christ, goes to Christ.
The 'judgement day' spoken of at Christ's return is the judgement when Christs own will receive rewards and crowns for their faithful following and teaching. This is the first resurrection, and death has no power over these resurrected ones anymore.
Those who are 'dead in Christ' (never knew Him) are resurrected at the end of the thousand years. This is the second resurrection.

I am also skeptical of these stories. I think that they saw "visions" or "dreams"but I don't think they were really there, for the same reason you said. They weren't judged. BUT, no they won't be asleep. When we die, we will be judged, then go to heaven. When Jesus returns, our bodies will join us. Jesus said to the robber on on the cross "TODAY you will be with me in Paradise".

My Pastor laughs at these books because he says that if all of these people went to the same place don't you think they would have the same descriptions, but they don't...it's all nonsense...just a way to make money...in the Bible a man speaks of how he went to Heaven and do you know what he said about it??...he said "it is not lawful for me to speak of that which I have seen"

The destination of hell is only temporary until the day of Judgement. After Judgement those in hell will be cast into the lake of fire.

I see hell everyday when asleep....well technically I am awake, but I am useless until after coffee...although before coffee I see myself in the mirror...trust me...that is hell.

That depends on your interpretation of what events happen to you after you die. Many, such as the Adventists, believe you do sleep when you die. Others do not.
