It's a fairly trivial thing to be willing to die for one's own beliefs, but how many of you out there would be willing to die protecting someone else's right to beliefs you don't share?

I'm kind of skeptical of the idea that one person's death would make a difference enough to protect the beliefs of another....

I honestly don't think that I would..not that I don't believe people should have the right, but because I believe that it wouldn't be my responsibility alone to protect that belief and that my death for that belief would only eventually lead to further persecution.

No, however I live in a country where people are sometimes called on unwillingly to do exactly that. Many drafted soldiers had to die to protect our country even though they did not agree with the reasons behind the war they were fighting.

All the gvts that have tried to restrict religious freedoms have been pretty darn scary ones, so it seems a very untrivial thing to be willing to die for the right to have religious freedom.

The Inquisition made it commonplace.

It I were to sacrifice myself because of someone else's beliefs, there would be a broader shared principle (e.g. Constitutional rights) at stake.

Ask any veteran of the U.S. military.

We ALL put our lives on the line by being in the military. And, it was to protect the freedoms enjoyed by ALL U.S. citizens...whether or not we agree with their particular belief systems.

Just how many people here on R&S have EVER "thanked" a veteran? (just curious)

What do you think? I promote freedom and the right to choose for EVERYONE without harassment from ignorant uneducated fools. Yes, I would be. Equality for all.

Honestly, I think dying for beliefs, whether mine or someone else's, is overrated.

Nah, I would set an example by not dying, much easier.

Interesting question. I strongly believe in protecting everyone's beliefs, but would I die for it? I dunno. I *can't* know until I'm actually in that situation. Hopefully, I *won't* know.
