don't you think that when engaging a discussion about your beliefs with atheists or others that you should leave out the trite cliches such as "Know Jesus, know peace- No Jesus, no peace? Before I became a believer I heard the same expressions and I thought to myself," If I believe on this basis, does this mean this is all there is to it? No rational, logical understanding of who I'm trying to believe in- just in case I actually have to one day explain this to someone else?" I'm not criticizing you, but some of the comments I've read on this post are really lacking in persuasion. If I were at the crossroads trying to decide which way to go after reading some of the "positions" taken, very little would offer me compelling and sufficient reason to follow your lead. Reading a book like the Bible requires prayerful and logical insight to soundly crush an adversary's hateful speech aimed at belittling and discrediting who and what you believe in. Agree? yes? no? maybe?

Is God a sadist?

* Exodus 4:11 - blindness, deafness, and other such handicaps are deliberately inflicted by god.
* God wants sinners to eat their own dung and drink their own urine. Cow dung is considered a valid alternative to human dung for those who complain. Ezekiel 4:12-15, 2 Kings 18:27, and Isaiah 36:12.
* As if dung and urine weren't enough, sinners are also expected (by god) to eat their own children: Leviticus 26:29, Deuteronomy 28:53-57, Jeremiah 19:9.

If not a sadist perhaps he just enjoys watching?

I was born as an agnostic/nontheist...and was that way till about 10 or 11 when i started to go into Hnduism. I officially started bein real strong in it since i was 12. i became vegetarian, and considerin i had to figure out life on my own, since nobody was eva there for me, i relied on Vedic teachings all my life. its a way of life that helped me grow, and it taught me many things. I had a lot of love for the divine, and regularly went to the local Hndu tmple (mandir). also, i met most of my friends from da mandir, and most of da ppl i kno eitha from Hndu events/holidays or da mandir. Its almost like a part of who i am, and fully contributed to who i was. well, life has its fair share of problems. but recently, i got fired from my job, and since than everything bout me changed. im no longer as pleasant, more isolative, n im loosin faith in god, more than i eva did. today i was in a convo w friend. he said i cant loose Hnduism, its a part of me that i grew w. i dnt even pray no more.

What should we do if empirical evidence and materialist philosophy are going in different directions???

The biologists have to tell us candidly whether they are asking us to believe in materialism because of what they know from studying the facts of biology or whether they are so devoted to the philosophy that they are willing to disregard evidence that doesn't fit in.

Our current tax laws provide tax exempt status for religion-owned buildings. Mosques, churches and temples go unburdened in our society and yet, as the cornerstones of their respective religious organizations they are the chief places of business and the primary money-makers for their organizations. Just as for Wal-Mart's and it's stores, a religion without it's chief commercial building would probably fail no differently than Wal-Mart would without it's super-centers. Has freedom of religion been interpreted incorrectly with regards to our real estate tax laws? Is it time to re-think this matter of public law? Please explain the rationale supporting your position on this issue.

What is the earliest Catholic church on record. What was the date? Was it before the apostles died? If so then why do they practice things that Jesus did not teach?
Jesus didn't pray to statues or tell his disciples to, or give out rose Marys and other stuff. I'm not trying to offend anyone, I'm honestly seeking religion. But first of all, was it the first Church?

"The Five Gospels," is a 550 page book containing translations of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. It was the result of a six year study by 24 Christian scholars from a number of Western universities. They decided to produce a translation of the Gospels which would be uncolored by the translator's personal faith. It was decided that this translation was to give the reader an honest picture of what Jesus truly said. They scanned the text for the words of Jesus, and collect an index of over 1,500 such sayings. They then tested the validity of each of these sayings, one at a time, to see whether Jesus truly said each one. They then produced a fresh translation, color-coded to show authentic Jesuit sayings and those of an unreliable nature. Their conclusion (page 5) was:

"Eighty-two percent of the words ascribed to Jesus in the gospels were not actually spoken by him."

They go on to reveal that:

"biblical scholars and theologians alike have learned to distinguish the Jesus of history from the Christ of faith. It has been a painful lesson for both the church and scholarship. The distinction between the two figures is the difference between a historical person who lived in a particular time and place...and a figure who has been assigned a mythical role, in which he descends from heaven to rescue humankind and, of course, eventually returns there."

Well then, if 82% of the "words of Jesus" found in the Bible were apparently never spoken by him then where did they come from? Some of the sources demonstrated by the authors are:

"The concept of plagiarism was unknown in the ancient world. Authors freely copied from predecessors without acknowledgment. Sages became the repository of free-floating proverbs and witticisms. For the first Christians, Jesus was a legendary sage: it was proper to attribute the world's wisdom to him. The proverb in Mark 2:17, for example, is attested in secular sources (Plutarch and Diogenes for example)...in the parallel to the Markan passage, Matthew adds a sentence taken from the prophet Hosea (Matt 9:13)."

Also:

"Hard sayings are frequently softened in the process of transmission to adapt them to the conditions of daily living...Variations in difficult saying often betray the struggle of the early Christian community to interpret or adapt sayings to its own situations... Matthew's version of the aphorism "The last will be first and the first last"(Matt 20:16) is softened in Mark 10:31 to "MANY of the first will be last, and of the last MANY will be first
