I've been doing it so that when it's opened, the front of the card faces the person and the opening is to the right...but is there a specific way you're supposed to do it? I feel like this is one of those etiquette details they never taught me in public school...

We had a Christmas potluck at work, and some people showed up to get food who didn't even work in our department. Most of us didn't even know who these people were. They obviously weren't from our department and in any case, did not bring a dish. My supervisor got mad because this has happened before (not sure if it was the same people showing up uninvited) and an email was sent out to all employees advising them not to get food from other people's potlucks.

Does this happen at your office too? What is up with these people? Have they no shame, class, or manners?

At work we drew names for "Secret Santas" and I"m the lucky one who drew the Boss's name. I need some help picking out his gift. He's only been working at this location for 3 months now, so not much is known about him.

Below is some information about him:
Male, likes golf, devout Catholic, 45ish, married with kids (youngest 15), new to Texas, photography hobbiest, moved from Louisiana, enthusiastic, and 5'10".

For Boss' day, we got him a calender and decorative cross. He liked them, but I don't want to repeat them and seem presumptious or give something that looked like I didn't care enough to be thoughtful.

I'm wondering what kind of nifty photography things one can get for $20. Or...should I get one of those "executive" gifts for his office? I thinkg most of them are pretty lame and he's not one to sit there and mess around on the clock. But if you know of one, please let me know.

Maybe I should call his wife? But I would hate not to get what she suggested.

I recently bought myself a flat-bed scanner to use just once, and I then lent it to a friend of mine who's used it more than I did and she'd eventually like to get one for herself. She's not very well-off so it would be a long time before she could get one, so I was thinking of giving her mine as a Christmas gift. Would that be a good idea or is it cheap and tacky to give someone something that belongs to you? I know she'd appreciate getting a scanner, but should I give her mine? It's still in very good condition.

The condo above me resurfaced their floor with pergo. I hear cracks and pops coming from the ceiling. Not foot steps, but cracks and pops, sometimes loud enough to wake me up. Not all the time, but enough to be annoying.

What is it? What should I do?

Okay, so you give someone a Christmas gift and they give you a thank you card. I got one last year and it confused me (I had gotten a co-worker a gift and she gave me the card). Do you give thank you cards for Christmas gifts??? If so, what's the rule for or against? I want to do the right thing and thank people if that's the norm? So confused....

walked past and I just knew the girl was going to look at me as she walked past and SHE DID !! All I was doing was chatting to my friend not paying attention to anyone. And then as I turned around to go back to the office to youngish foreign girls were staring at me up & down? Why do women have to stare to make me feel stupid or insignificant ??

My Friend and I were in a TGIF a couple weeks ago. We have had an ongoing disagreement since. Once our food was served, within 2 minutes, the waitress came and asked us if we would like to make a donation to a cause. (I don't remember the charity) I immediately said no thank you. I proceeded to tell My friend how that annoyed Me. I don't like telemarketing calls at home, I surely did not want to be telemarketed in restaurant where I sat down to enjoy a meal. Had the waitress waited until she presented the bill, I wouldn't have minded so much. I give to alot of charities, I am not cheap or selfish. I found this to be a rude intrusion, what do you think?

I am in college doing a group project with 4 other people. The other people in my group dont come to class half the time, and I keep asking and making suggestions as to who cover what during our presentation. It is a short chapter of a book we have to report on, and I could very easily do it all myself.Should I just write the whole report and do all the talking during the presentation? This counts for 10% of our grade for the course! No one has done any preparation, it is kind of hard when no one comes to class. The professor is quite arrogant and unapproachable.

My husband is trying to surprise me for Christmas, but I saw my niece bring the present in the house and I know what it is. Would you tell him or let him think he got away with the surprise?

My birthday is Dec. 23 and I am going to get a birthday present and a Christmas present from my boss but I will receive them on two different days. Do I need to send two thank you's since technically I got two presents or can I lump them both into one card?

I keep asking my mother-in-law to NOT send us potted poinsettias anymore. My husband has asked her as well. They are lovely large plants that are very unyielding to carry around to the bathtub to water, I have a terrible green thumb and feel guilty when I can’t keep them alive. Basically, she doesn’t have a clue as to what to send us for the holidays, so, she goes with an old standby. How do I tell her politely that they are more than a nuisance than I care to put up with ? I have told her that I do prefer a bouquet arrangement and I usually send her one with some trinket with it, ie: a candle, teapot or mug. She has told me that she would appreciate it if I were to stop sending the keepsake gift, so I have and only send her the flowers. How can I get her to remember not to send a potted poinsettia ?

...lie? Children are so honest, and say whatever is on their minds. But most parents have criticized and sometimes punish their children for these words, so over time, they learn to lie or keep quiet (also lying by way of omission). So are we really not able to handle the truth?
