I recently bought myself a flat-bed scanner to use just once, and I then lent it to a friend of mine who's used it more than I did and she'd eventually like to get one for herself. She's not very well-off so it would be a long time before she could get one, so I was thinking of giving her mine as a Christmas gift. Would that be a good idea or is it cheap and tacky to give someone something that belongs to you? I know she'd appreciate getting a scanner, but should I give her mine? It's still in very good condition.

I think it is a wonderful gift idea because you already know that she wants a scanner , she knows how to use the one you have , and you are willing to give it to her. I would make sure that she knows that you are giving her yours, you could add a gift bag of candy to it so that you are giving something old and new.
Merry Christmas!

Buy her another gift; and let her use your scanner whatever she needs it. Giving her another gift is respecting a friendship and showing her importance to you and how dear she is. Although she would appreciate you giving her the scanner as a Christmas gift if you intend to do so, she might feel you pity her for not having one and giving your old one maybe will make her feel bad about herself for borrowing yours all the time. A good gift and a helping hand
(like borrowing your scanner all the time) will be enough for her.

If I were your friend this is what would work for me, get a nice Christmas card and maybe a box of sweets. Write a nice note warm wishes, with love...and all that without mentioning the gift and then tell her, be honest, tell her you want her to keep the scanner and that you like seeing that she uses it and enjoys it.
I wouldn't mind at all if my friend did this for me. Just make sure you make it clear that you don't use it and you don't want it, and this is not you telling her she kept something for too long and now you don't have a choice but to let her keep it. Women like to analyze things too much so just make sure you tell her this.

I would say give her the scanner but also something small to take care of the ceremonious aspect of gift giving. Wrap some chocolates with a card. Then post script the card to say. Btw the scanner, keep it :). She will be touched and the occasion will be satisfied.

It would be nice to give her the scanner, but I wouldn't give it as a Christmas gift. I would just give her the scanner and find something else to give as a Christmas present.

You have answered the question for yourself, if she will know that the scanner was yours and that you used it then that is tacky, however if it appears to be in bew condition and you can supply the initial box that it came in then it will be a good idea.

What an earth is one of them? Incidentally No to that gift Idea. The only suitbale gift I think these days is to donate money to charity on behalf of the intended. Match the charity to the person and for children adopt them an animal, its an all year present!

If you still have the original packaging pack it up and feel guilt-free about giving it to your friend. But be sure to tell her it is the one she's borrowed from you before and that you wanted her to have it since she needs it more than you do. Don't try to pass it off as unused. If you don't have the original packaging be sure to pack it up really securely before you give it to her. I think it's a great gift!
