I would say something like, " Well, that's why I am wearing it and not you." And then laughed it off.

I will ask her "Why" and will not let it go until I get a definite answer. This is often the best form of "discouragement" for stuff that have no value to you and also the best form of learning new stuff that has value. For example, may be your mother is aware that the particular perfume is the trade mark of male/female sex workers in your town. Or may be the smell reminds her of some past un-plesaant stuff and you should be no party to it.

Nothing...
Opinions are like as*sholes you know...
Perfume is very personal... not everyone has the same kinds of diet, chemistry or natural body scent for outside smells to blend with. Some things smell wonderful on some people and HORRIBLE on others...
I have been wearing the same perfumes for YEARS! For that very reason...
I wear; Cashmir by Choppard, issey Miyaki, Loccitaine scents blended... and the only thing to come out recently that I wear is lovely by SJP which people find very overpowering if you are not careful with it...
Chanel No 5.. is a classic example of a beautiful scent ON SOME people... and total noxious crap on others!

There really isn't any polite way to respond to that. I wouldn't
wear that perfume the next time I went to her house, though.

Nothing because she will not say that to me because I don't wear a perfume.

I'd say - Really cause I bought one for you for Christmas!
Its your mom though respect is due! Just tell her you like it and your choice of perfume is well, yours!

Well, it's your Mum. If I liked it and felt comfortable wearing it, I'd probably just laugh and say, well ok. Don't see the problem. If it's a stranger saying it, it's pretty rude and uncalled for but when it's your Mum it's different somehow.

Probably because of being steeped in legalism. I don't care for the term to love the sinner and hate the sin because if you love everyone, [and every one is a sinner], then you cover the sin, not hate it. For love covers a multitude of sins and love delights in overlooking a fault.
