Well, unlike a slap or an object, water ... or any liquid or food ... causes the victim to have to clean up and possibly change clothes. The slap or object is over with quickly.

in the earlier part of the century, women carried themselves "properly". No real lady would strike another person. Usually if a man presented an unwanted, unsolicited or just rude advance or comment to a woman (which was usually of the sexual nature) a woman would throw a cold drink usually into his lap or, his face to "Cool him down". He had insulted her integrity as a woman. The tossing of a drink evolved into an insult on the person getting all wet.

How would you feel? My whacked out neighbor (just moved last week YEEHAW) threw a glass of cranberry juice in my face last summer. WHY? Because I didn't tell her her boyfriend was parked up the street, I didn't FRICKEN even know. I am so glad they moved!!
It was insulting, cold, humiliating I could go on. She did it in front of my company that was visiting. I was insulted, I went into my house crying, my friend made her come and apologize to me. She was hormonal and out of it, pregnant, but still! It's An insult, especially when you don't deserve it!

Would you like someone to throw liquid on you? Especially in public, it's humiliating. It's like having to wear your bad deed (as in, whatever you did to deserve getting liquid thrown on you) all day long.

Well, wouldn't you be just a tad irritated if, dressed up for a party say, some idiot threw a glass of water in your face?

It gets you wet, and gets on your clothes. And it's embarrassing. Depending on the liquid, it could burn your eyes.
