Belief in the existence of vacuums used to be punishable by death under church law. Have you people conquered your fear over the vacuum cleaner yet? Or do you still think science is scary and not to be trusted?

Every time I ask a question that questions religious teachings all I get back is mean remarks about being immature, stupid, poorly raised and inevitably doomed. I didn't ask them what they thought of me being an atheist, but they seem to prefer that question. You know who you are you mean people. When I questioned an atheist about his lack of beliefs when I was catholic he said things like; "Ooohh, that's a good question, but..." and nice things. "Compliments" even. All his atheist friends were the same. I'm well aware of the fact that atheists (as well as religious people) will often intentionally annoy the other side but that's just some peoples idea of fun. Why the different approaches to answering serious questions though?
It's religions intolerence of pretty much everything that turned me away from it.

Why do people post questions, questioning the existence of free speech on Yahoo! Answers and being particularly angry about it when they signed up under these terms and conditions: http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/, particularly this section:

6a:
"You agree to not use the Service to:

upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any Content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;"

On top of that, there are numerous community guidelines that simplify the rules stated in the legal article found here: http://answers.yahoo.com/info/community_guidelines

These links are provided when you sign up, found at the bottom of every page and the community guidelines are provided when you ask a question.

Why do people continue to assume that they have the right to free speech here?

i am an atheist... BUT, honestly, i used to be a christian. ok, i just want to here what u have to say about a dream i had... in my dream it was raining and stormy, the sky was purple, and the ground was like dirt and i was kind of up high, and then in the distance there were 3 crosses, and i am guessing 'jesus' was the one in the middle, and there were these men pushing a crown of throns into his head, and it was really gross and there was blood and i felt so weird in my dream, like there was this force or power if u get wot i mean, and then i felt so sad i actually woke up crying... i think itz a weird dream, but could it be a message? i was wondering, if there was some sort of a god or life force and jesus were his son or prophet, could i still believe in just that and not the bible? because it does contradict itself... i don't know if deep down i still have hope and faith or if it's just the left overs of being brainwashed...

people?? Why would he punish people who followed the religion but were not able to accept that he is God in their heart?? This seems like an awefully cold punishment for someone not being able to acknowledge truth.

Are there any verses that say that a person who is good but does not know God will get to heaven?

"Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the Bible prohibits the consumption, storage and transfusion of blood including in cases of emergency. This has been their view since 1945."

Personally I think this practise is callous and despicable.

Specifically because I feel I cannot live up to Church standards. Specifically, being a "Menance to Society" by being a single male. I have been a member since 12. I am not an RM at the time most young men are normally doing that I was serving my country as an Officer in our Armed Forces. I have been married and divorced twice and though I have no biological children adopted my 2nd wifes daughter the week before I married her mother.
I don't see another marriage or even romance in my future. I have never been a "Ladies Man", I have been left for abusive men, men being released from jail and once even for a woman.

Due to panic disorder I no longer drive and the nearest ward or branch is 40 miles away. I can't get to activities and stay pretty much at home.

Ladies can find husbands during the Millienium but I have never found a scripture which says the same about men. Some have expressed opionion it must be true but I have never found a scriptural reference to it.

Opinions pleas

...is the planet Earth at times very unstable to life?

Such as -

* erupting Supervolcanoes (there is one ominously simmering underneath Yellowstone National Park, and it is overdue)
* regular, cyclic Ice Ages
* irregular Magnetic Field fluctuations
* violent Siezmic activity
* mass carbon realeses (whereby carbon-storing trees and oceans rapidly decreases it's storage potential of carbon thereby suddenly altering the Earth's temperature).

Most of these events only happen perhaps once every 500,000 years, but most of these are capable of casing mass extinctions.

Indeed, in the last 550 million years there have been 5 major extinctions wherby more than 50% of animal life has perished (including the Dinosaurs).

Now, the point of all this is -

The Earth is sometimes extremly hostile, but if God had designed Earth differently (e.g., a more stable world), then many of these chaotic natural events would not happen.

So why did God design the Earth to act violently?

There was about 2 weeks that we had repairing in our home and I had to go about 30 mins late to my gym. I thought that I can copensate these 30 mins with working with the treadmill and static bike that is there and I sometimes saw ppl use them after their aerobic classes. So after I finished my 300 mins from 1 hour of aerobic class, for these 2 weeks I used treadmill and static bike to compensate my 30 mins late. It's actually not a big gym and I saw so many others who used these without having to register for them and I asked a gal and she said we use them they don't usually say anything if you work with these machines after your class.
Well today, after our aerobic class I used the treadmill for a short time and the I went to register for the next month as my classes for this month got finished. But this time the registrant asked me if I use the gym body-building machines too, and I told her frankly that only on these 2 weeks as I came late I used them as I thought that we can, and she said no even if you come late, to use the machines you should register for them separately. Well I didn't know that and I told her cause the other gyms that I went to before allowed using body-building machines for a while after aerobic without having to register for them separately. So I said ok i didn't know that and asked the fee for using machines. After I wanted to get my card back(which I handed to her to put the last tick for this month of my gym), I saw that she has marked two ticks by mistake, one for this last session that and another one for my next session which I just registered for. Then suddenly our own aerobic teacher also came and sat there infront of the registrant. I told the register that she has put two marks and so she removed the extra tick that she had put on my card by mistake. Well so I was about to leave the gym and close the door that I heard the registrant is telling our aerobic teacher that "she has registered for aerobic but she uses the machines too!!", well I was almost out of the gym and couldn't turn back at that time to explain for our aerobic teacher also :(. But I thought that this can make not a good image in our teacher's view, and also at the same time our repair in our home has also finished so I wont be late at the class anymore.
But I'm already abit upset because usually our teacher doesn't sit there infront of the registrant and this time I think she heard and thought bad about it...I was coming out when the registrant was telling our teacher:(....I didn't want that happen....

If you were in my shoes what would you tell to yourself in this case, with knowing that I didn't know and I wont be late and won't use the machines also anymore....I would be ontime and will come back after our aerobic class from now....But I still don't have a good feeling of that our teacher was told about this there, and I don't think I would find anyother chance to tell her that I didn't know that, though maybe telling her later wouldn't also help.....
Just what would you think to yourself to come out of this bad feeling ...I feel a bit upset now....I think it was not needed to be told to our teacher but the registrant told that because I mentioned the extra tick that she had put by mistake and our teacher was there too....So what would you tell your self to come out of this bad feeling if you were in this case with knowing them all? :(

What do some people want us to do?

The Crusades were horrible. Christians have acted badly in the past: witch burnings, etc.

What do people want Christians in 2007 to do? Do you want us to abandon our faith because members of our group acted terribly hundreds of years ago?
Do you want us all tortured and killed to somehow atone for these things?
What good would that do? Do you want revenge somehow?Sometimes it seems as if some of you are putting Christians today on trial for the atrocities of the past.

Would it give you a sense of satisfaction to see us suffer for something in which we had no part?

Do you really think that all of us are horrible people because of these things?

This is an honest, heartfelt question.
I am not attacking anyone.
I am a good person. I did nothing to hurt anyone.
Why should I or any other Christian be blamed/attacked for The Crusades, witch burnings, etc.?

I want to hold a dinner party for about 20 adults at my home. I have 2 young children myself but for a change and a stress free night want to have an adults only dinner party. I have no problem telling my friends to get a babysitter and they are fine with that, but I am inviting a few of my students, who are from mixed cultures. How do I word the invitation so they know they can't bring their kids but without making it sound impolite. (I really do not want any kids to come!).
