I want to hold a dinner party for about 20 adults at my home. I have 2 young children myself but for a change and a stress free night want to have an adults only dinner party. I have no problem telling my friends to get a babysitter and they are fine with that, but I am inviting a few of my students, who are from mixed cultures. How do I word the invitation so they know they can't bring their kids but without making it sound impolite. (I really do not want any kids to come!).

At the bottom of the invite, put "Adults Only" in a nice font. It is subtle, but there!

Adult Party Invitation

That is a good question. I've grappled with this issue myself. These days most parents think an invitation to them, means their kids are welcome too. It didn't used to be like that, but....
anyway, maybe you could write "couples party" on the invitation? Otherwise, it's supposed to be acceptable to write "adults only" on the invitations, although I've never been comfortable doing so. I usually rely on word of mouth. I send out the invitations and then later call to check on people and say, slyly, "So, are you guys gonna be able to find a sitter for the party? I really hope you can. We're all looking forward to you being there."

People will understand if you want Adults Only. There is no reason to think that ppl will snub you. Actually, it's nice to go out like this. It is okay to have a "big kids party" and if you DO get snubbed then shame on them! Don't invite party poopers next time.

You need to simply state in the invitation Adults only party and that's it.

Well Start of by saying that you would like to invite them to the party for a night of adult fun. Make is nice and cheery. Add in that its a chance to have fun without kids.

If it's a formal party maybe saying something to the effect of:
"After the kids are put to bed, come enjoy a nice relaxing dinner and intellectual conversation at my place."

If it's informal:
"Let's dine with some fine wine and friends.... Inviting all those whose bedtimes are after 10pm.."

just name the guests they should ask if in any doubt if the children are invited and you can then tell them,or if you see them in person chat about it and say your looking forward to a child free night for a change

We are hosting a wine party and I m calling it an adult mix and mingle. That should be clear enough.
