That's horrifying. Poor you.
The more deeply religious, the more violently the reaction to atheism, it appears. I guess that the very notion that someone thinks your most cherished fantasies are just delusions is deeply threatening to them, and they want to punish the person responsible.
It's probably no comfort, but they have already demonised you to the point where no communication would be possible. You're the lucky survivor.

That's Harsh! But unfortunately it happens a lot. Especially in the really strict religions. It doesn't really make sense though does it, when you think that religion is supposedly about enlightenment and love and forgiveness. You would think that the more religious you are the stronger these traits are but it seems to be the opposite. I think it may be because the major religions base their teachings very dogmatic principles and in a persons struggles to adapt to these principles all the basic elements of human nature such as the ones i have listed above dont get nurtured enough.
Its kinda like when people get caught up in their day to day activities such as work, money, problems etc. we sometimes lose focus on what's important in our lives, like our children and our families and ourselves. Religion is the same. I have nothing against religion but i have a big problem with people misconstruing its teachings to hurt others.

If you are the atheist then you were labeled and categorized before you were born, as the most vile of all people. If you were brought up religous you should know this somewhat already.
I think that religous people that behave like this most often SINCERELY believe you are not to be trusted. they may have the opinion that 'atheism' leads evil... or it maybe because you deserve to be pushed away, and it may have nothing to do with your stance on religion all together. I dont know

Superstition, indoctrination, meanness, poor education, poorly developed empathic response mechanism etc.
Some religous cultures will kill you for the same thing.
