A "toll" is a payment given for access somewhere such as on a motorway or crossing a bridge. So "Taking its toll" means that the situation is demanding some sort of payment from the person - usually a drain in your energy levels in the form of stress , causing tiredness etc.

That the girls are getting on his nerves, or tiring him out. Ultimately just wearing him out and he would prefer them to leave. Saying "this is taking a toll on me", is like saying i'm getting worn out by doing this.

The Toll is one word that used to mean 'a tax' and therefore came to mean a 'burden'. Obviously your bf cant deal with the demands of his visiting friends and is feeling somewhat exhausted and would dearly love to return to the TLC provided by yourself. OR he just cant cope!

When something or someone takes its toll, it just means it is wearing you down, generally proving hard work and that you have had enough.

They are wearing him out. Maybe he's forever taking them sightseeing and he's very tired of it.
If you say 'My job is taking it's toll on me' it means you have been working so hard you are getting fatigued and fed up.

He meant they are wearing him out!

Now that can be taken to mean that he is over-taxing his stamina with them........... or he is finding their attentions, or attitudes wearying.

If I were you, I'd be asking some detailed questions!
