If God were real why does he let so much suffering go on in the world?
Anybody who can convice me of the existence of God wins.

If you can, define God.

I'm graduating from college in December and I mentioned to my mother that I would love a certain necklace that I've had my eye on at James Avery. Its about $130 and is very classic and timeless.

I paid for college by myself (with student loans) and I worked while I was there.

My mom seemed fine with my request and seemed happy to oblige. My dad, however, felt it necessary to say "Aren't you getting enough at graduation already?" To which my inner response is "You mean the degree that I WORKED FOR and PAID FOR?" Well, if that's what you mean, then yeah I guess I'm just a selfish brat.

I know I won't be getting money or anything like that for graduation (my extended fam's not close.) So am I really out of line in my request? I mean, some people get new cars and stuff!

Is this typical theistic relativism, waffling on principles when it suits them, while scolding others for doing the same?

ok this one will be hard for people with no intellect to understand- with the exception of "why do atheists come on a religious site" the most common question asked to atheists is "what will you do when you discover you are wrong and are going to hell" well follow this logic- the thing atheists hate most is smug fundies gloating about saving our souls, so lets say they are right and there is a heaven and hell-hell to an atheist would be being surrounded by smug fundies BUT they will all be in heaven!!! therefore for an atheist to suffer eternal torture they would have to go to heaven- do you not agree?

I dreamt seeing 2 of my dead relatives. One was wearing black shoes, the other very shiny red shoes with white leggings. Does anyone know what this could mean?

I walked towards the one in the red shoes to talk to her but she floated upwards until I only her legs with the shiny red shoes were dangling in front of me, as if distracting me from going to the relative in the black shoes.

Catholic Church?---Do you realize that the Catholic Church is about to acquire over 400,000 converts in one fell swoop? This is the work of the Holy Spirit, and how great he is.

I see that this question has come up a few times in the past, though not for a while. Still, my apologies if you've answered this before.

I'm curious as to everybody's answers though - if I'm surprised or startled and I say "Oh my god" or "Jesus!" does that mean that:

A) I actually do believe in god somewhere deep down inside (possibly around the spleen area)

b) I'm blaspheming on purpose

c) They're pervasive expressions of surprise in our culture, it would be more surprising if I *didn't* say them

Conversely, if a Christian says something like that in a similar situation, does it mean anything or does it just indicate belief?

I understand the Big Bang theory and I understand Evolution. I get all of that, it makes sense...they are both good theories.

So the Big Bang happened a long time ago, time passed and gases and material came together to form stars and planets. I'm still on board. So sometime down the road, the earth has been created and has cooled enough to form water and solid land....I'm still getting all of this.

But then what? We have, in theory, a universe of non-living matter. What was the "spark" that gave life to non-living matter? Once that spark occurs, sure we get evolution and mutations and we all know the story from there. Is there anything that we know of that can turn non-living matter into living matter?

So what was it that gave the spark of life to non-living matter to convert it into living matter?

I mean, look at the facts: Judaism 2000 BCE (4,000 years), Christianity 0 CE or 300 CE (roughly 2,000 years, actually like 1,700 years because for the first 300 years, the Christians still believed themselves to be an offshoot of Judaism, rather than a separate religion, the Council of Nicea severed all ties to Judaism).
Islam 622 CE ( approx 1,385 years).

So we've established that Judaism is by far the oldest, older than Christianity by 2,000 years and older than Islam by 2,622 years.

Isn't it the newer religions that come out hating the previous ones? And trying to "improve" it? You know, Judaism was the most ancient one, then Jesus came to "improve" it, then Mohammed denounced both Jews and Christians. And all the major fighting throughout history has been among Christians and Muslims, while Judaism sits on the sidelines. Both religions have practiced genocide against the Jews, without the Jews retaliating.
Jews dont seek converts or wage war for God as the other 2 do.

"Besides, the use of the cross in worship is no different from the use of images in worship, a practice condemned in the Bible. "

"First-century Christians, however, held the sacrificial death of Christ in high esteem. Likewise today, although the instrument used to torture and kill Jesus is not to be worshipped, true Christians commemorate Jesus’ death as the means by which God provides salvation to imperfect humans."
