Yes, that's right. It was Christmas so loads of people were on holiday celebrating Jesus' birthday. Joseph and Mary didn't get chance to phone the Bethlehem Tourist Information Centre because they couldn't get any reception on their mobile phone during the journey. When they arrived the TIC was closed for Christmas.
No, actually the real reason was because Caesar had issued a decree for every citizen of the whole Roman Empire to go and be registered in their hometown. Joseph was a direct descendant of King David, who was from Bethlehem, so Joseph had to go there. David had a lot of descendants so that's why there were so many people in Bethlehem being registered. They were Joseph's cousins, 2nd cousins, etc.
Incidentally the inn was doing a special deal on Caesar salads, which weren't selling that well, which is understandable. The chicken curry with a popadom was the most popular choice.

cos they had a census and everyone had to go back to thier original countries and towns, bethlehem was obvioulsly a town whiere many many people had originated from, they had all moved out but with the census being called they all had to move back, resulting in there not being enough room for everyone, mary and joseph had walked with the aid of a donkey so they hadnt gotten to bethlehem fast enough to bag a real room. Everywhere was full when they arrived.
The reason for the census? the king at the time had gotten wind of a premonition that the future king of the workd was being born and he wanted to keep tabs on every new baby so he could slaughter them all and thus wouldnt be under threat of being denounced by the future son of god.

The local authorities had insisted that everyone returned to their home town in order to be counted in the census. So many people had complied with this rule that the local accomodation was full to overflowing. Even the stable was a little crowded with all those donkeys, sheep and cattle. And as for the mangy dog that was there well what a place to be born.

As others have said there was a census so a lot of people about.
Jesus preached about being humble in his ministry, so it makes sense that he was born in a barn amongst the animals. As that is quite humble indeed. There is a verse which says something to the effect of; The least in this world will be made the greatest in heaven.

Because men were being told to go to their place of birth with their family for a census. Joseph was born in Bethlehem so he took his wife but they arrived too late and all the rooms were taken, so they had to stayin a stable where Jesus was born.

It was a busy time. A census was going on... Besides it's not like inns had 100 rooms each. They had like 3-7 rooms.

According to my memory of the bible, there was supposed to be a census which meant all eligilble citizens had travelled to jerusalem - leaving no empty rooms
