First of all, it is possible that God has reasons for allowing evil to exist that we simply cannot understand. In this the Christian can have confidence in God knowing that His ways are above our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). As the Bible says, the just shall live by faith (Hab. 2:4).
Second, God may be letting evil run its course in order to prove that evil is evil and that suffering, which is the unfortunate product of evil, is further proof that anything contrary to God’s will is bad, harmful, painful, and leads to death.
God gave Adam dominion over the world (Gen. 1:28). When he rebelled against God, he set in motion an entire series of events and changed the very nature of man and creation. Both were affected by sin. Creation was no longer a paradise, but bore thorns and thistles (Gen. 3:17-18; Rom. 8:22). People became sinful (Rom. 5:12; Eph. 2:3), who were haters of God (Rom. 3:19-12), etc. The only conclusion to such a situation is death. Jesus said, "And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened" (Matt. 24:22).
Sin is rebellion against God and His created order. But God has not left us alone in this fallen world. He continued to enter this world, pointing us to Himself, to truth, to morality, purity, and love. He used the evil of the world (liars, perjurers, the envious, etc), to bring His Son to the cross so that we might have the opportunity of eternal life. In this, God has not stepped away from fallen creation, but has stepped into it by becoming Jesus. God works within the fallen world to affect change and He uses fallen people to accomplish His will. In this, He is proving His sovereignty over evil, suffering, and rebellious people, proving that sin and evil are utterly futile, and that He is worthy of honor and glory.
A third possible reason that God is letting evil occur is so that on the day of judgment, the condemned will have no right to say that their sentence is unjust. God is not stopping people from exercising their free will. Think about this: If someone said that God should stop evil and suffering, then should God then stop all evil and suffering? If God only stopped some of it, then we would still be asking the same question of why it exists. So, if we want God to stop evil and suffering, then He must stop all of it. We have no problem with this when it means stopping a catastrophe, or a murder, or a rape. But what about when someone thinks of something evil? Evil is evil whether it is acted out or not. Hatred and bigotry in someone’s heart is wrong. If it is wrong, and if God is to stop all evil, then He must stop that person from thinking his own thoughts. To do that, God must remove his freedom of thought. Furthermore, which person on the earth has not thought something evil? God would be required, then, to stop all people from exercising their free will. This is something God has chosen not to do. Therefore, we could say that one of the reasons that God permits evil and suffering is because of man’s free will.
Fourth, it is quite possible that God uses the suffering to do good. In other words, He produces patience through tribulation (Rom. 5:3). Or He may desire to save someone through it. Take for example, the account of Joseph who was sold into slavery by His brothers. What they did was wrong and Joseph suffered greatly for it. But, later, God raised up Joseph in Egypt to make provisions for the people of that land during the coming drought of seven years. But not only was Egypt saved, but also so was his family and brothers who originally sold him into slavery. Joseph finally says to them, "You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good" (Gen. 50:15-21). Of course, the greatest example of God using evil for good is the death of Christ. Evil people brought him to the cross, but God used that cross as the means to save the world.
But then we must ask, if this is true, are we working against God by working against evil and suffering? No, we are not. God says he does not want us to sin and suffer. But it is simply true that God can use evil despite of its apparent despicable nature.
God is in the world using the world and its failures for His glory and the benefit of those who listen to Him.
But then, what about those who seem to innocently suffer with no benefit resulting? What about the woman who is raped, or the innocent by stander who is killed by a stray bullet. In both cases, the victims and families suffer nothing but pain and loss. What good can this possibly be?
I think that the answer is two-fold. One, ultimately, no one is innocent. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23) and are by nature children of wrath (Eph. 2:3). There is none innocent. Though this is biblically accurate, it does not satisfy the question emotionally. Why do little babies suffer for things they have not done? I must acknowledge that I do not know. Ultimately, we must trust God who knows the beginning from the end and sees the grand picture. He will have the final word and He will be vindicated.
Conclusion
Suffering is the result of human sin. The world is not the way that God created it and because of that, all are vulnerable to the affects of sin in the world. Why does one person suffer and another does not? Why do catastrophes happen to some and no others? It is because sin is in the world. But there will come a day when the Lord will return and cleanse this world of all sin and all suffering.

Okay, you asked the age old question of why do bad things happen to good people. This is such a childish question, seriously.
God gave free will to each and every person on this earth. Some have chosen to believe Him and have dedicated their lives to Him. Others feel that He is a myth and choose to turn their backs to the truth. Yes, bad things do happen, but they happen as a result of the choices people made with their free will. If a Christian smokes and developed lung cancer, they knew the risks when they started. If an atheist steals a car and gets caught, they will end up in jail. Again, they knew the consequences.
Why is it that everyone always blames God when bad things happen? Why not really sit and think as so the actual cause of the bad things? It all comes back to the choices we (or others) make. I do realize that God allows it and that everything has to go through Him to happen, but if we had chosen differently, things could have happened differently.

in order to have a discussion about this, you must be open minded enough and mature enough to accept peoples ideas. if you are open minded, you will be able to recognize truth when it is spoken.
first point. when we came to live on this planet. the only way that we could do it was to be given agency. this is the right to choose right from wrong.
if we went to school with all of the answers to the tests then we wouldn't learn from our mistakes.
God lets things happen to people that are both good and bad. the baby that is lying in it's crib who gets shot and killed. was that God's fault? absolutely not! this was the choice of others. The guy who invests wisely and makes a fortune. God or just lucky. No! this is the result of study and research.
God doesn't need a definition. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. his laws don't change and his existence hasn't either.
Good luck with your search for the truth.
Your Brother in Christ.

First of all, God did not create robots, that may be what you want but thats not what God wanted. So we choose, and we make some bad choices. John 3:16, For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Jesus came into the world born of a Virgin, died on a cross to wash away our sins. God is Holy, He is our Creator, he said let their be light and their was. Its that simple. Jesus was the Light. If we accept him as Lord and Saviour his Spirit will come and live in our hearts and we can have a personal relationship with him. This is the greatest thing that can ever happen to a person on this planet. To have a personal relationship with the creator. His gift is free, and Heaven is our reward. Believe it, the Bible says to Look UP and know that I am God. Even the very hairs of your head are numbered, and every idle word you say is recorded. Could a big bang do all that. How about a chimp, Not in my life time. Lets face it, He is the Potter, and we are the Clay, Jesus loves you, he died for you on a cross, accept him into your heart today, if you seek him, you shall find him, here's how, just pray this simple sinners prayer believing, just say Dear Jesus, I know and confess that I am sinner in need of salvation. I believe you died on a cross at calvery and arose from the grave to wash away my sins, I ask you right now to come into my heart and save me, I pray this Prayer believing in the name of Jesus Amen. If you prayed this prayer with a sincere heart you are now a child of God, rejoice that your name is written in the Lambs book of Life. Jesus will now send his Holy Spirit to come and live in your heart and guide you into all truth. If you have any questions just send me an email, God Bless YOU!!

He allows suffering becuase of what Adam and Eve did while they were in the Garden of Eden. God created them and then told them not to partake in the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. Satan tricked Eve into eating the fruit which she then shared with Adam. As a punishment God sent Adam and Eve away from the garden to live on the land. In the garden they were taken care of, outside of the garden however, they would have to work the land, labor, suffer, child birth would become painful for women, etc. It's all in the first chapter of the bible.
It sounds silly, but so do so many of the other miracles that happend in the bible. There are so many events in the bible that have been proven true that it is hard to discredit it. It has been proven that Jesus was a real person that was crucified.
Yes, the bible was writen thousands of years ago, and you have to consider the things that we know now, weren't know at that time. Especially that the world was created in seven days. For all we know, back then, seven days could have taken as long as 7 million years because obviously there was no way to measure time. The way the majority of the bible is writen is God spoke and people wrote. So could God have put some things in terms for us to understand?
God may cause suffering, and we have Adam and Eve to thank for that, but he also does many wonderful things as well. If you believe in God then you must believe in Satan and that he can make people stray from God, causing dispair and suffering. God also gave his only son for our sins. We have to prove to God that we are capable of being good enough to be worthy of that forgiveness. You will be forgiven as long as you believe in God.
It is also described in the Bible that God is Love. As humans there is so much that we don't know and understand, which means there are so many things that we can not comprehend. God, would be one of those things that we can not comprehend. He is the beginning and the end. The bible states that we, as humans, were created in his likeness, therefore, you could argue that God would look like a human. But again, If God was trying to tell us something that we could comprehend, then there is no telling what he looks like and what he is. There is no way we could understand. God is transcendent and omnipresent.
You could read the Bible, if not purely for entertainment. Because it's also a history book and it has so much information in it. I took a world religion class in College and the information that I gained from other religions is so fascinating. You might learn something you didn't know just by reading the Bible.
You could argue about this all day long. But it takes just as much to NOT believe as it does to believe. As long as you are a good person and want forgiveness and believe that Jesus died for our sins you will be forgiven because God loves everyone.
There have been many instances of grief and suffering, take 9/11 or WWII for instance. These were major events where many lives were lost. But, when they happend everyone united and helped each other. There was a sense of love from everyone because of those events. People were eager to help one another. I think it takes events like that to make people realize they need to stop and think about how they have been living their lives and be thankful for what they have. God works in many ways. All of which we can not completely understand.

catholic crusader, i am blown away by the illogical line of reasoning you put forward with an amazing redundancy of words. Motion needs something else in motion and since there cannot be a first mover because that mover has to have a first mover then the first mover is god????? what is god? who is god? there is NO first mover, under what grounds is thomas concluding that there is one and under what grounds is he reaching the conclusion that the one is 'god'? Yes, i read the first paragraph and your litany of words does not lead to the conclusion you put forth.
To answer the question, there is no god. There are, however, humans who ARE responsible for the ills of the world you mentioned. They can choose to blame it on some sky daddy or bottom dwelling monster but that doesn't change anything. Humans have to face and deal with what we have made our world into

I won't win, because I cannot convinse you. I can only tell you how I know He is real. The wondrous things that have happened to me and for me could have been nothing else BUT God.
There is this yearning inside all of us for something. We think it is this or that, and we try it on our own, and later find out that it doesn't last (that joy and peace that comes only from Him). We feel a tug inside us. Now it is up to us to recognize what that tug is, and what our very soul is hungering for. I found it. It is Him.

i get so sick of people telling others verses from the bible and..if they don't do that then they just say something like" because god this or god that" without any sort of proof at all..religious people just need something to believe in or they will go crazy..either that..or they are scared of "Burning in hell" ._. but I'm not saying those people aren't good people..if religion makes someone good..then fine with me but stop trying to explain everything with something someone from along time ago said..please..

God allows bad to happen to some people as a punishment for their sins. think about this, if they get punished now, they don't have anything but rewards to get on judgement day. but for those who commit sin (and dont' repent or do good to make up for them) and don't get punished, he doesn't love as much as the others because that means they're likely to get...HELL. But i hope and pray that he forgives all and even you and allows your blindness to be removed so that you may drink from the fountain of knowledge and realize his existence and possibly get to heaven. I will pray for you and ask for forgiveness for you.
