I think the tiger is by far more ferocious and would beat the lion.

I kayacked to an island and spent the weekend last week. As I was gathering wood on Saturday, I stumbled upon a plump porcupine. Did it swim there? Was it trapped after the ice thawed? Any thoughts? (The island is a few hundred yards from shore.)

Ok, it was a few years ago and I was about to go to sleep, I happened to look up at the ceiling and see a gigantic spider, about the size of my fist. It was brown, but it was not a tarantula because it wasn't hairy and fat. It was thin and spindly (the worst kind in my opinion.) Anyways what kind of spider is this? I've never seen any like it, and I hope I never do again.

My son and I are vacationing in the Sonora Desert near Phoenix, and he is interested in observing arachnid life here (which is evidently quite diverse)-Does anyone know the best method of finding the different species, and what time, area, microhabitat we should look for? Thank you very much

What benefit (if any) do flies bring to the environment?

I must say they seem like a terrible annoyance.
They're always buzzing around.
In third world countries, they plague the poor starving peoples, and it's hard to imagine anything more despicable than maggots.
I'm not seeing any redeeming qualities, and I can't understand why God would have created them...

My cat always cleans herself. No matter what. What is the reasoning behind this. I cant think of any other animals that do this all the time. And do big cats (lions, tigers) do this as well?

There are millions and millions of birds on the earth and I am sure they die everyday. I have in my lifetime maybe seen under 20 dead birds. I have lived in both the country and the city and the suburbs so location doesn't have anything to do with it I think. You would imagine that since there are so many birds around that there are also many diseases and if they die in flight where do they go? Why aren't they just falling out of the sky?

Entimologists (if any of them are able to work a keyboard) would I am sure say that there is a point, but they know they are on shaky ground;

I know they have to defend insects as they have made the career choice of pinning dead things to boards for a living

Okay okay, butterflies are pretty...but that is it surely...

I'm serious. I'm going to the Bieszczady mountains where there are apparently 200 bears and not many people. I've just read that a bear in that area killed 3 years old European bison. I know that bears usually don't attack people, but if I come across such hungry beast, what is the best way save your life? They run faster than me and can climb the trees.. I don't have a gun permission. Anyone experienced?
