I kayacked to an island and spent the weekend last week. As I was gathering wood on Saturday, I stumbled upon a plump porcupine. Did it swim there? Was it trapped after the ice thawed? Any thoughts? (The island is a few hundred yards from shore.)

Porcupines can swim well because of the hollow quills

I think most mammals can swim but I assume this island was fairly barren not condusive to good porupine habitat!?
If it was a larger island, big enough to support a population of porcupines it is possible that they have lived there since there was a land bridge with the mainland when sea levels were lower due to an earlier glacial period!? Or it could have drifted there on debris during floods!?
Hopefully it has sufficient food, if not it should make it back to the mainland OK.
Cheers.

I have actually seen footage in a nature documentary where they had a waterproof camera and a Porcupine swam by while they were filming.

It looked rather humerous. Like a very vertical doggy paddle. My nephew said it was like the porcupine was riding a bike.

So, yes they can swim.

I believe they can swim, but maybe the porcupine is when from the island was attached to the mainland and didn't get off when it separated.

What do you mean breathes funny? Is he opening his mouth? I don't know much about spotted groupers, but when I was scuba diving, I noticed that grouper(nassau groupers, in this case) keep there mouth slightly open before they strike. I would keep an eye out, you never know with groupers. They are so unpredictable.
