There are millions and millions of birds on the earth and I am sure they die everyday. I have in my lifetime maybe seen under 20 dead birds. I have lived in both the country and the city and the suburbs so location doesn't have anything to do with it I think. You would imagine that since there are so many birds around that there are also many diseases and if they die in flight where do they go? Why aren't they just falling out of the sky?

When birds die, other animals eat them. Or, if a bird is sick, it is more likely to be caught by a predator and eaten for food. Everything decomposes when it dies. If a dead bird isn't eaten by a predator, it will decompose with the help of bacteria, insect larvae, etc...with the whole process taking no more than 1-2 weeks. If you think about it, if this process didn't occur, earth would be overun with dead animals (and people) everywhere! Hope this info helps you.

Most birds do not die in flight because it is not that sudden. They become too weak to fly and go off into a different area (wood, etc.), as do many animals. If the bird is attacked by a predator, it is sudden, of course, but most of the time they have become sick or just old. It is not known why they "leave the area to die" but they do. This is why you do not see them. Hope that helps. :)

Interesting thought, I haven't seen a bird just drop without first being shot. But I see a lot of dead birds along the roads.

They usually die from an illness - so, like you, when they get sick, they go and find someplace to hide - on the ground - when they're in their weakened status, they are usually preyed upon by dogs, cats, or other carnivores. The reason that you don't see dead birds is because they got eaten.

As girlwhoknows points out old or sick birds are preyed upon and eaten. Besides that, birds have rather delicate muscular-skeletal systems compared to most mammels and once they die their remains are quickly consumed by ants etc.

Gee, I've never thought about it. But if they die in flight, when they hit the ground there's probably not too much left, not to mention being food for other animals.

That is a very good question! I never thought of that before! I really wonder where they go, because they obviously have to go somewhere. Hmmm. I'll have to read up on it or something, because you have me thinking!
